A Program for Social & Environmental Activists
Each year, middle and high school students from across Santa Cruz County design, construct, and model original pieces of fashion art made from recycled and repurposed materials. Their creations are bold, imaginative, and deeply personal—reflecting themes of identity, culture, sustainability, and social awareness. Through this process, students gain design and engineering skills, explore environmental and social issues, practice creative problem-solving, and discover the confidence that comes from transforming an idea into art.
What began 15 years ago at Mission Hill Middle School has grown into a countywide celebration of youth creativity, sustainability, and self-expression. FashionTeens Santa Cruz now connects students from Watsonville to the San Lorenzo Valley, with mentorship, bilingual applications, and free participation ensuring every young designer has the opportunity to shine.
The program culminates in a professional runway event—a night filled with energy, artistry, and joy—where students walk the stage to the roar of cheering crowds. For many, it’s their first time seeing their voice, identity, and creativity celebrated publicly.
