Gilberto Gil: Gilberto's Samba

One of the world’s great songwriters.
— New York Times

Gilberto Gil is one of Brazil's national treasures. Gil was key among the leaders of the Tropicalia movement of the 1960s, fusing bossa nova, samba and salsa with rock and folk music-and securing his fame both abroad and at home in Brazil. He went on to become the Brazilian Minister of Culture, playing a key role in the constant modernization of Brazilian popular music and culture throughout the world.

Today, Gil can look back on a career that covers four decades, over fifty albums, and numerous awards – including seven Grammys. With his latest album, Gilberto's Samba, Gil pays tribute to the compositions of Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, and other important Brazilian songwriters who influenced him. Gil's band features Bem Gil – guitar; Domenico Lancelotti – drums and percussion; and Mestrinho – accordion.
