This year the Ocean Film Festival World tour celebrates 10 years of inspiring, educating and protecting oceans around the globe. The two and a half hour program showcasing films from independent filmmakers worldwide, has been hosted annually in 14 countries over a 10 year period, touching countless lives in and out of the ocean. The Ocean Film Festival World Tour has been at the forefront of marine conservation and adventure filmmaking since its inception. Over the past ten years, it has become an exceptional platform for filmmakers and ocean enthusiasts alike to share their love and passion for the seas with audiences around the globe.

Festival founder, Jemima Robinson remarks, “Ten years ago we started the Ocean Film Festival World Tour with big dreams, not only to inspire the world to explore and enjoy our oceans but further to protect and respect them. With a personal passion for film and all things ocean, I wanted the Ocean Film Festival World Tour to become an avenue for promoting ocean conservation and bringing people together to celebrate mother nature. We have done this through sharing unique stories by independent filmmakers from around the globe, reaching many exciting milestones, and now we set our sights towards the next 10 years of making an even greater impact”.

The 10th Anniversary Tour will showcase a handpicked selection of the finest ocean-themed films from across the world, featuring breathtaking cinematography, thought-provoking narratives, and heartwarming tales of marine life and conservation efforts. From adrenaline-pumping surfing documentaries to deep-sea explorations, the festival will offer a diverse and captivating lineup that will leave the audience both entertained and enlightened.

“Featuring a line up of adrenaline inducing yet heart touching films, witness the very best stories from the likes of an epic surf trip to the untouched waves of eastern Russia in winter, or visually feast on breathtaking seascapes as an Australian man attempts to make a wing foiling world record, or venture to the Arctic with a team of explorers and scientists to discover why the earth is losing sea ice. This year's 10th Anniversary celebration provides yet another year of show stopping films”, explains Jemima.

Join us in celebrating ten years of oceanic wonder, adventure, and conservation at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz. Let the Ocean Film Festival World Tour transport you to the depths of the seas and inspire a deeper connection with our blue planet.

SOUNDS OF A GENERATION

In the picturesque wilderness of British Columbia, Canada, nestled amidst towering evergreens and glistening waters, lies Orcalab, a remote land-based research station. For over four decades, researcher Helena Symonds has dedicated her life to studying and listening to the captivating sounds of orcas that grace these pristine waters. Helena Symonds is Co-Director of the orca research station OrcaLab.  There she specialises in orca acoustics, social aspects of orca behaviour, and impacts of human activities on orcas and their habitat.  With an unwavering commitment to understanding the orca population, she has amassed a treasure trove of audio recordings that reveal the soul-stirring vocalizations and intricate communication of these majestic creatures. Through her eyes, we gain insight into the complex social structures and emotions of the orca pods, while also witnessing the challenges they face in a rapidly changing environment. However, "Sounds of a Generation" also highlights the pressing issues threatening the orcas' existence. As human activity encroaches on their natural habitat, the orcas face pollution, noise disruptions, and declining food sources. Helena's work takes on an urgent dimension as she becomes an advocate for the protection of these beloved creatures, using her vast knowledge and recordings to raise awareness about the plight of orcas worldwide.

"Sounds of a Generation" leaves viewers inspired and deeply connected to the orca world. Helena Symonds' life's work becomes a testament to the importance of understanding and protecting these extraordinary creatures, urging us all to take action and ensure a future where the sounds of orcas continue to resonate for generations to come.

HYPNOTISE

Celebrating the old and the new, ‘Hypnotise’ is set beneath the surface of the eastern Australian coastline demonstrating that new life can come be born out of the depths of tragedy and become something truly beautiful.  After 34 years serving in the Australian Navy, the ex-HMAS Brisbane was scuttled off the coast of Queensland in 2005. 17 years later, this epic 130 metre artificial reef is home to over 200 species of fish.

CORNERS OF THE EARTH: KAMCHATKA

Follow filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment and surfers Letty Mortensen and Fraser Dovell as they journey to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia in search of new waves along the frozen, unexplored coastline. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk with more than 150 volcanoes (29 active) the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia is as remote as it is unique. After 2 years of planning the trip was almost over before it started. An hour before boarding their flight to Moscow, Russia invaded Ukraine. At a time when the world was seeing the worst of human nature, these guys flew behind the iron curtain and found, to their surprise, the best of it. Mi-8 helicopters, skidoos, frozen campsites, and frozen bank accounts, this surf trip quickly became far more than anyone could imagine.

IN SEARCH OF A FROZEN OCEAN

A team of 5 explorers and scientists venture to the Arctic Ocean, 500 miles from the North Pole to conduct research as to why the earth is losing sea ice and how this impacts the rest of the world. The route they take is one that was taken by native inuit tribes a thousand years ago and will allow them to access parts of ice that scientists have never before seen. Follow their journey as they determine how sea ice evolves and ultimately how our climate system is evolving. What they discover is extraordinary.

WHALE DREAMING from Southern Ocean Live

Warren Ngarrae Foster, a Djirringanj Elder of Yuin country shares how his people have connected to the whales and dolphins of the area for generations and consider them family. This is a visually stunning celebration of an ancient culture and an ancient breed of marine life.

CASEY THE OCTOPUS from Southern Ocean Live

Imagine you go for your usual morning walk along the beach, just like any other morning, except this morning is different because you discover something extraordinary. This is the story of a Rosebud woman who stumbles across a decision that will either give or take life. A remarkable reminder of the connections that can be formed between humans and animals.
