The RESIDENTS
The Cryptic Corporation has announced that The Residents will perform a series of shows in 2010. The show is being considered by the group to be an experiment in new directions deviating from the more "band" productions of Wormwood through The Bunny Boy.
The "song" Talking Light was first released here by RSD in late Spring 2009. It was the positive response to the song that encouraged The Residents to start work on bringing the idea to the stage.

NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS
The North Mississippi Allstars were founded in 1996; a product of a special time for modern Mississippi country blues. RL Burnside, Jr. Kimbrough, Otha Turner and their musical families were at their peak; making classic records and touring the world. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi Blues legacy while playing and shaking it down at the juke joints with their blues ancestors. Luther (guitar and vocals) and Cody (drums and vocals) joined up with bassist Chris Chew to form the core of their own band, The North Mississippi Allstars. Through the filter of generations of Mississippi Blues men, the Allstars pioneered their own blues-infused rock and roll.
After touring as an opening act for a variety of artists and honing their chops as a unit, the North Mississippi Allstars issued their debut album, Shake Hands With Shorty in the spring of 2000. Their debut proved to be a success and earned them a Grammy nomination for "Best Contemporary Blues Album". Bringing their hill country bluesinfused rock & roll to stages all over the country and the world (including multiple tours in Europe and Asia), the Allstars quickly gained a loyal fan base. The band gained additional popularity for their work in the Gospel-Blues band The Word, which also featured John Medeski and Pedal Steel player Robert Randolph. By 2005 the North Mississippi Allstars' had released 4 studio records, 3 of which were Grammy nominated and earned the reputation as one of the most intriguing acts to emerge from the loam of Southern blues and roots rock.

Huun Huur Tu
Performing with Carmen Rizzo
Huun Huur Tu with Carmen Rizzo: The songs that echo in boreal forests and bounce off primordial peaks have a blind date in the Hollywood hills. There, carefully crafted electronica meets the horse-hair spike fiddle, and stone images of the ancestors are praised to the sound of lush strings. This is no remix - it is a sonic meeting of minds between musicians on two continents.
This is the new sound of the world's best loved re-inventors of Tuva's musical treasures, Huun Huur Tu, and their latest album, Eternal. Hungry for a fresh approach, the group recruited electronic musician/producer Carmen Rizzo (Niyaz, Seal, Paul Oakenfold) and composer/arranger Mark Governor, who has scored dozens of major films.
What began as a blind date has become a real-life collaboration: Huun Huur Tu with Carmen Rizzo and Mark Governor in live performance, beginning September 2009.
Huun Huur Tu was nominated for a 2008 BBC World Music Award. They continue to be available alone as well as in collaboration.

Valentines day show with Rickie Lee Jones
From the moment she first appeared in front of us on Saturday Night Live in 1979, Rickie Lee Jones has challenged her listeners and the establishment with an absorbing musical vision that defies border and classification. She rocked the culture of singer-song writerdom with her refusal to conform to the stayed and careful eloquence of the folk rock generation that came before her. Neither punk nor pop, she tottered on a thread of her own devise, jazz - the old musical kind, and R&B - the Motown thread that permeates her work. Her sense of humor, musical dexterity and song craft is all evident on her exquisite new album Balm in Gilead. Celebrating her 30th anniversary making music, Rickie Lee returns to Santa Cruz for this special valentines day show

Yard Dogs Road Show
The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is both pleasant and formidable terrain. They require a sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed – followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual and sonic voodoo.

JOE BONAMASSA
Guitar Virtuoso
As Joe Bonamassa grows his reputation as one of the world's greatest guitar players, he is also evolving into a charismatic blues-rock star and singer-songwriter of stylistic depth and emotional resonance. His ability to connect with live concert audiences is transformational, and his new album The Ballad Of John Henry (Premier Artists/2009) brings that energy to his recorded music more powerfully than ever before. The ninth solo album and seventh studio release of his career - as well as his fourth consecutive with producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Black Crowes, etc.) - the disc adds a heavy dose of "swamp" to Bonamassa's virtuoso mix of '60s-era British blues-rock (à la Beck and Clapton) and roots-influenced Delta sounds. It shows off Bonamassa's vocal range as much as his instrumental voodoo, and the artist says, "I feel this is my strongest work to date ".

BASSEKOU KOUYATE and NGONI BA
"To all the rock 'n' rollers of the USA, I'm coming in February, 2010!"
That's Malian maestro Bassekou Kouyate with a heads-up well worth heeding. A virtuoso picker and musical visionary whose work blurs the lines between West African and American roots music, Bassekou has jammed with Bonnie Raitt and Bono, won praise from Eric Clapton. He's also dug into blues and country music with Taj Mahal and created freewheeling improvisations with banjo maverick Bela Fleck. Bassekou's instrument, thengoni, is a "spike lute" and an ancestor of the banjo, sharing its taut-skinned drum body, percussive attack, and varied picking techniques. Since 2005, Bassekou has led Ngoni Ba, the first-ever group built around not one but fourngonis-all played by members of his family. The group's second CD I Speak Fula comes out on Sub Pop in February of 2010 (preceeded by a digital release via iTunes in December '09) on the occasion of Bassekou's first U.S. tour as a headliner.

Blood Into Wine
Maynard James Keenan, internationally known as the front man for Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, is one of music's most mysterious figures. A multi-million selling artist, little is known about the reclusive rock star who often dresses in costume and rarely gives interviews. In the mid-1990's, on a whim, Keenan left Los Angeles and moved to an Arizona ghost town (population 300). A wine enthusiast, he began to envision a world class wine region on the Verde Valley's craggy slopes and with wine mentor Eric Glomski (former David Bruce winemaker and current owner of the award-winning Page Springs Cellars), Keenan began the long road to bringing credibility and notoriety to Caduceus and Arizona Stronghold Vineyards amidst wine industry prejudice and the harsh Arizona terrain. Blood Into Wine takes viewers into the struggles and triumphs with a unique blend of comedy and master storytelling.

"Now we're born again," sings Zach Rogue on the closing track of Rogue Wave's fourth studio album, Permalight. The dreamy acoustic lament lasts just over a minute but in sound and spirit it neatly sums up everything that comes before it. Yann Tiersen
Yann Tiersen was born in Brest in Brittany and now lives in Paris. Many composers work alone during the composition process, though Tiersen has taken this a step further by recording many of his albums himself. On the soundtrack to Amélie for example, he is credited with playing the following instruments: toy piano, carillon, banjo, mandolins, guitar, harpsichord, vibraphone, accordian, piano, bass guitar and melodica. When working on those albums, one can only assume that he lays down the parts one by one to build up the track in layers. Tiersen is not a recluse however. There have been many concerts of his music, performed using a substantial number of musicians. Tiersen himself frequently plays the piano or accordian during such live performances.

Jean-Michel Cousteau
The Great Ocean Adventure
For more than four decades, explorer, environmentalist, educator, and film producer Jean-Michel Cousteau has used his vast experience to communicate to people of all nations and generations his love and concern for our water planet.
Since first being “thrown overboard” by his father at the age of seven with newly invented Scuba gear on his back, Cousteau has been exploring the ocean realm. The son of ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, Cousteau spent much of his life with his family exploring the world's oceans aboard Calypso and Alcyone. After his mother's death in 1990, and his father's death in 1997, Cousteau founded Ocean Futures Society in 1999 to carry on this pioneering work.
A response to his father's call to “carry forward the flame of his faith,” Cousteau's Ocean Futures Society, a non-profit marine conservation and education organization, serves as a “Voice for the Ocean” by fostering a conservation ethic, conducting research, and developing marine education programs. Cousteau serves as an impassioned spokesman and diplomat for the environment, reaching out to the public through a variety of media. He has produced over 70 films, and been awarded the Emmy, the Peabody Award, the 7 d'Or - the French equivalent of the Emmy, and the Cable ACE Award.
The specific matter and content of Mr. Cousteau's multimedia presentation will be provided a few weeks prior to the event

BREATH MADE VISIBLE
BREATH MADE VISIBLE is the first feature length film about the life and career of Anna Halprin, the American dance pioneer who has helped redefine our notion of modern art with her belief in dance's power to teach, heal, and transform at all ages of life.
This cinematic portrait blends recent interviews with counterparts such as the late Merce Cunningham, archival footage, including her establishment of the first multiracial dance company in the U.S, and excerpts of current performances such as "Parades and Changes" at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, to weave a stunning, inspiring account of one of the most important cultural icons in modern dance.
BREATH MADE VISIBLE 2009, 80 min. Switzerland, USA, Directed by Ruedi Gerber
"Ms. Halprin becomes quite as rich a subject for film as Ms. Monk: another odd face, another wonderfully calm (though ardently enthusiastic) and open talker, another (and senior) artist who responds to both politics and scenery."
-NY TIMES
"Engaging. Illustrative. The quintessential Left Coast choregrapher Anna Haprin has helped push the boundaries of modern dance."
-VARIETY
"An intelligent, beautifully photographed, smartly edited film."

Race Across the Sky
a documentary featuring racers Lance Armstrong and Dave Wiens from Citizen Pictures
At 10,000+ feet, against the misty backdrop of a former mining town, Leadville, Colorado, 1228 cyclists line the starting line. For many, it will be the most difficult race of their lives. For some, a bragging right to say they raced alongside the best in the world. Some imagine victory. Most hope only to finish. But everyone will count.
The race that started 25 years ago as a running race to drive tourism in Leadville has now grown to a lottery cap of 1000+ competitors, many of them the world’s most elite cyclists. But the Leadville Trail 100 "Race Across the Sky" Mountain Bike Race is not just a race of man against man: it’s man vs. man, man vs. self, man vs. elements, man vs. time. A clock set for 12 grueling hour’s slugs through 100 miles, over 14,000 vertical feet of climbing, some two miles above sea level, through extreme climate changes ranging from heat to hail, from rain to snow. To the racers, the risks of injury, fatigue and mechanical failure pale next to the chance that they will fall behind the 12 hour cut off mark and be eliminated.
Rivalries include six-time defending champion Dave Wiens vs. international star / seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Inspirational stories of human triumph include a Leadville woman rider who was critically injured by a car while training for last year’s race, another who suffers from multiple sclerosis, and 45+ rider who has raced all 15 years.
Whether they’re international stars of the sport or everyday folks with the will to finish a race whose difficulty is on par with the Ironman, the grit to push to their own physical and emotional limits strikes an elegant symmetry between racer and environment and a struggling former mining town whose very existence now relies on the tourism generated by this race.

" OUT OF THE BLUE "
80-Minute Documentary Film
Produced and Directed by Chris Thompson
A Soundvision Media Films Release
In the late 1930's, the sport of surfing finally arrived to stay in Northern California when a small group of surfers from Los Angeles at college in San Jose began to venture over to the coast and surf the frigid waters of Santa Cruz. A few local kids soon became inspired to take up the sport for themselves with no formal instruction, making their own equipment and banding together to help each other along and overcome the elements. Eventually, more would join in and the Santa Cruz Surfing Club was formed, complete with a boardhouse and clubhouse that became the center of the social scene on the beach until World War II changed their lives and brought a sudden end to a memorable era in California's history. Directed by local filmmaker Chris Thompson,“Out of the Blue” features archival footage and interviews with the dozen surviving club members – several of whom will be making a personal appearance to answer questions from the audience.

CocoRosie
The luminously lovely indie folk-tronic duo CocoRosie consists of the Casady sisters, vocalist/guitarist/harpist Sierra and vocalist/percussionist Bianca. Both sisters had an early love of music that they pursued as they grew up, albeit in different ways: Sierra began operatic vocal training while she was in high school, while Bianca sang and wrote songs but kept them to herself. That is, until she reconnected with Sierra, who joined Bianca at her Paris apartment, and they started playing and recording songs together. The fruits of their labor, La Maison de Mon Reve, was released in spring 2004 by Touch and Go and was predated by a string of dates in New York with Devendra Banhart, the Gena Rowlands Band, Battles, and Ratatat. Their second album, Noah's Ark, which featured cameos by Devendra Banhart and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, arrived in fall 2005. 2007's The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn was a more polished but still eclectic effort.

Best Worst Movie & Troll 2
Double Feature
Best Worst Movie is the acclaimed feature length documentary that takes us on an off-beat journey into the undisputed worst movie in cinematic history: Troll 2.
In 1989, when an Italian filmmaker and unwitting Utah actors shot the ultra-low budget horror film, Troll 2, they had no idea that twenty years later they would be celebrated worldwide for their legendary ineptitude.
Two decades later, the film's now-grown-up child star (Michael Paul Stephenson) unravels the improbable, heartfelt story of the Alabama dentist-turned-cult movie icon and the Italian filmmaker who come to terms with this genuine, internationally revered cinematic failure.
Is Troll 2 really the worst movie ever made as claimed by IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes? Or is Troll 2, as some would claim, a misunderstood masterpiece that never fails to entertain... a work of genius? Twenty years after Troll 2 was made, the feature length documentary BEST WORST MOVIE explores the Troll 2 phenomenon through the personal story of the cast of characters that took part in its creation and why it is celebrated by fans worldwide.
In the summer of 1989, Italian director Claudio Fragrasso cast small-town dentist Dr. George Hardy and a group of unwitting Utah actors in an ultra-low budget horror film, which eventually became the undisputed Worst Movie in History. Soon after Troll 2's initial release, Dr. Hardy decided he was better suited battling tooth decay than goblins. He retired from acting and returned to dentistry in his hometown of Alabama unaware of the legions of fans that would one day recognize him as a cult movie luminary.
Nearly 20 years later, Troll 2 has suddenly become "awfully" popular. A corn-on-the-cob sex scene, pudgy-potato-sack clad midgets, and a peculiar plot about evil vegetarian goblins attempting to transform a young boy's family into edible plants is unintentionally hilarious, yet strangely captivating and highly entertaining.
Dr. Hardy finds his days of drilling cavities are met by nights of signing hundreds of autographs at record-setting revival screenings throughout the world. Unlikely byproducts celebrating the BEST WORST MOVIE include fan sites, music videos, dress-up dinner parties and even homage in one of the most successful video games, Sony PlayStation's Guitar Hero 2.
But what does the director of Troll 2, Claudio Fragasso, think about his film becoming "awfully" popular? Meet cast & crew and learn how it feels to fail miserably and years later be applauded for it. Best Worst Movie is story of one of cinema's greatest tragedies... or triumph's -Troll 2. The result is a hilarious and tender off-beat journey and a genuine homage to lovers of bad movies and the people that create them.

Paul Thorn
The first thing you notice is The Voice, unique and distinctive, the voice of a man who has walked a long, hot span over dusty Mississippi country roads. At turns soulful, raw, melancholy, brazen, funky, circumspect, serene, brooding, and mutinous, the voice expresses the range of human emotions, from forlorn grimness to incandescent optimism. And after repeated listens, you realize that his is not merely the voice of a poet but also of a merciful prophet, a summation not unjustified. Those who follow the career of Paul Thorn believe he is both. Artist's web site

CIRCA SURVIVE
with The Dear Hunter & O' Brother
Whatever you think Circa Survive's new album means, you're right. However you understand the lyrics, in whichever way you construe the melodies, whatever emotions rise within you, whether it generates nostalgia or pain or hope or something you can't name, Blue Sky Noise expands to encompass any possible perception of itself.
The Doylestown, PA-based band's multi-faceted sound has always allowed infinite space for interpretation, melding intricate prog and mind-bending psychedelia with massive riffs and singer Anthony Green's reflective, intimate lyricism. With Blue Sky Noise, Circa Survive have crystallized their complex sound and equally involved ideas about the world around them into their most confident and focused collection to date. They Might Be Giants
They Might Be Giants is a band from Brooklyn, New York that was founded twenty somethin' years back by John Linnell and John Flansburgh, and are often joined on stage and on recordings by Dan Miller, Danny Wienkauf, Marty Beller, Dan Levine and Curt Ramm. We recently won the 2009 Grammy for Best Children's Album (Music) for a kids project called "Here Come the 123s." TMBG perform frequently, make videos and podcasts, and do a fair amount of television work.
The band is just about to release a full length album and an animated DVD called "Here Comes Science." You can pre-order it on Amazon right here, and on iTunes here. The DVD features original animations by over a dozen original artists, and is really a glorious creative thing.
This fall TMBG will be on the road doing a wide variety of shows across the entire United States. BAG IT
Is Your Life Too Plastic?
Our story follow Jeb Berrier, an average American guy who is admittedly not a "tree hugger," who makes a pledge to stop using plastic bags. This simple action gets Jeb thinking about all kinds of plastic as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of plastic in our world. When Jeb's journey takes a personal twist, we see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up to us and what we can do about it. Today. Right now.
BAG IT is a film that examines our society's use and abuse of plastic. The film focuses on plastic as it relates to our society's throwaway mentality, our culture of convenience, our over consumption of unnecessary, disposable products and packaging - things that we use one time and then, without another thought, throw them away. Where is AWAY?? Away is over flowing landfills, clogged rivers, islands of trash in our oceans, and even our very own toxic bodies. Jeb travels the globe on a fact-finding mission - not realizing that after his simple resolution, plastic will never look the same again.

Julian Wilson's Scratching The Surface
“Scratching The Surface,” the highly anticipated first feature-length HD surf film starring Julian Wilson, debuts this month with a free showing at the Rio Theater. Julian’s sponsors, including Quiksilver, Red Bull, Oakley and DC Shoes, have teamed up to help produce the film. “I’m really proud of this film and grateful I had the opportunity to create something unique in surf filmmaking,” said Julian. “I wanted to make a film before I got sucked into full-time competition and the demanding schedule that goes along with it. So instead of competing last year, I put my heart and soul into this project because I didn’t know when I’d ever get the chance again.”
Directed by Matt Beauchesne at Irons Brothers Productions, “Scratching the Surface” documents the adventures of Julian, along with friends and fellow professionals Dane Reynolds, Taj Burrow, Dusty Payne, Mick Fanning and others as they spend a year hitting some of the world’s most beautiful surf spots. Destinations include South Africa, Australia, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, California, Hawaii, France, Spain and Brazil. A large part of the film was also shot in the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia on a boat trip with Dane, Dusty and Taj.
“Scratching The Surface” also teamed Julian and Matt with Brain Farm Cinema, whose goal was to evolve the way surf films are made by utilizing helicopters and The Phantom Camera, shooting entirely in HD, and
incorporating an energetic and unique soundtrack. To get an early peek of this groundbreaking film, the “Scratching The Surface” trailer and webisodes can be viewed at www.julianwilson.com.
“Our goal with this film was to be creative, have fun, and enjoy capturing what it is like to be Julian Wilson,” says Matt Beauchesne. “Julian has a bright and vibrant personality that we wanted to carry over into the film’s overall
feel. He is living every kid’s dream and we wanted to shoot this film through his eyes.”

Jenny & Johnny
Jenny and Johnny = Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice.
Immediate support - Ganglians
1st of 3 - Farmer Dave Scher (special)
Jenny and Johnny first started working together in Los Angeles in 2005, after being introduced by Conor Oberst. Rice had traveled to Nebraska to make his first record before moving to L.A. , where Lewis was beginning work with Mike Mogis on her solo debut Rabbit Fur Coat. They both ended up playing on each others recordings, and struck up a lasting creative relationship. Rice joined Lewis' band for the Rabbit Fur Coat world tour in 2006, and has played live with Lewis at every show of her solo career thus far. Jenny contributed both songwriting and singing to Johnathan's Further North in 2007, and he was quick to return the favor as one of the producers of Lewis' album Acid Tongue and again joining her on the road. During the Acid Tongue sessions, the band cut the song "Carpetbaggers" with Elvis Costello. The legendary songwriter was so inspired with the collaboration that he enlisted Lewis, Rice, their Acid Tongue crew, and the Imposters to help make one of his finest records of recent years, 2008's Momofuku.
Jenny and Johnny locked out Mogis' world-class ARC studios for five weeks of tracking, vocals, and mixing during the worst Midwestern winter since the 1860's. The front door of their guest house actually froze shut, so they used an alternate route to get to the studio every day. Cut off from the outside world in a blizzard's haze, the record's personality began to emerge. Gone were the vintage, classic-rock textures of their previous two albums, and in came a brand new sound which was tougher around the edges. The exuberance of love songs like Scissor Runner mask some of the record's darkness, with Lewis chronicling the economic demise of her beloved California in Big Wave, Rice's haunting vocal on Animal, and both songwriters raising a middle-finger kiss off in the acerbic My Pet Snakes. The overall result is genuine and original pop music for Right Now. This is not a Rilo Kiley record, a Jenny Lewis record, or a Johnathan Rice record. This is Jenny and Johnny. They're having fun now, and they want you to, too.

Robert Earl Keen and Fred Eaglesmith
Robert Earl Keen: Keen emerged in Texas in the 1980s and 1990s striking an unusual balance between sensitive story-portraits and raucous barroom fun. Unified by a mordant sense of humor that strongly influenced the early practitioners of what would become known as alternative country music. Artist's web site
Fred Eaglesmith : Born to a farming family in rural southern Ontario. Often employing his difficult upbringing as raw material for his heartland narratives, Eaglesmith is known for writing songs about machines or vehicles, including songs about trains, tractors, trucks, cars, and engines. Justin Townes Earle
TOUR CANCELLED
Justin Townes Earle is an anomaly. He's tall as the day is long, all angles and elbows and a hard stare, both welcoming and deadly serious. He's Nashville North, all set up in lower Manhattan now, just like his hero Woody Guthrie, with twang and charm intact.
That hard working earnestness has paid off, to say the least. Justin won the Best New and Emerging Artist at the 2009 Americana Music Awards. His record, Midnight at the Movies, was named one of the best records of last year by Amazon, received four stars in Rolling Stone and found a sweet spot in the blackened hearts of fans and critics alike. GQ Magazine named him one of the 25 best dressed men in the world in 2010. He also appeared on HBO's Treme with his dad, troubadour Steve Earle, on whose Grammy Award-winning Townes record Justin also guests.
The aforementioned Woody Guthrie once said, "Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple." On Harlem River Blues, Justin chose the simple route. The record's not a wall of sound produced to the rafters. It's rockin' and reelin' at times, sweet and slow at others-and it's great. Like good fried chicken, a well-cut suit and a handmade guitar, there's heaven to be found in the beautifully crafted simpler things.
Compared to the much-lauded Midnight at the Movies, Harlem River Blues is more mature and increasingly nuanced, while still embracing the raw voice and clean sound of previous standout tracks like "Mama's Eyes." Harlem River Blues kicks off hot with the title track's choir of backing singers and electric guitar, slow dances through a decrepit tenement on "One More Night in Brooklyn," and swings à la Jerry Lee Lewis on "Move Over Mama." "Working for the MTA" is a modern day railway ballad, embracing the labor movement in classic folk singer style over some heartbreaking pedal steel from Calexico's Paul Niehaus. With percussive guitar, killer standup bass lines by Bryn Davies and a guest appearance from Jason Isbell, this record hums along like a 6 train jumpin' the tracks and heading straight for the Tennessee state line.
Harlem River Blues straddles not only the Mason-Dixon, but time itself. As versed in Mance Lipscomb as he is in M. Ward and sporting Marc Jacobs suspenders, Justin Townes Earle is a man beyond eras. With Harlem River Blues, a record that's perfect for late Indian summer nights on either the front porch or fire escape, Justin's found yet another way to be a timeless original.

TOKYO POLICE CLUB
Tokyo Police Club took its first baby steps toward finding that voice with its formation in 2005. The band was off and running the following year, releasing the debut EP A Lesson In Crime to instant and universal acclaim. One more EP (Smith), a digital-only single ("Your English Is Good") and a few world tours later, Tokyo Police Club's first full length album, Elephant Shell was released in April 2008. Elephant Shell's release ...was preceded by multiple sold out shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto, and followed by appearances on The Late Show With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson and, bizarrely enough, Desperate Housewives. Critical response to the full length was even more enthusiastic and diverse, with the likes of GQ ("Strokes-caliber catchiness"), Elle ("a smart, furiously played sugar-rush debut"), Rolling Stone ("poised to become the biggest Canadian export since Molson") and more giving thumbs up. The guys circled the globe in support of Elephant Shell for approximately a year and a half, finally coming off the road in August of 2009.
All of which brings us to Tokyo Police Club unveiling Champ to ears and eyes the world over, as the band embarks on a tour as special guests of Passion Pit that will take them through the end of June. Barely hours after that tour concludes, the boys will kick off a headlining tour that will find them headlining through the summer, combining Champ material with the numerous fan favorites in their live set. "There's really not one thing to sum it up," says Monks of the record. "Musically we didn't follow any kind of framework or preferred kind of song. Any direction we went is a direction that just felt fun.
"Or you could say," he concludes, "It just sounds like us."

SHADOW SHADOW SHADE
THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED
Obsessively hung up on stories about the aftermath of the Great War, Brian Canning began writing letters and diaries for things yet to happen. Steven Scott arrived at Brian's apartment one day around that same time, head full of carnivals, dust bowls and steam. Meanwhile Brent Turner was dreaming of tubas and drum lines and was deathly afraid of the apocalypse; he met up with the two soon thereafter. Their friend Aaron Burrows was most likely holed up downtown somewhere, reading scores and contemplating a Russian mass spectacle, but he'd undoubtedly be along soon. Elsewhere, Tom Biller was at Beer, Wine and Fish-a super-creative millennium falcon of a recording lab with machines buzzing and whirring and breaking constantly. He had worked with Jon Brion for a few years and would eventually work with Liars, Karen O. and Warpaint. The only thing missing from his resume was a band to call his own. Claire McKewon kept herself busy chasing superlatives down any dark road she could find them. A full-ride opera scholar, she split her fascinations evenly between Wagner, Schopenhauer and the intoxicating flowers of the central Asian steppe. In her spare time she was building a women's choir dedicated to Brian Wilson songs. Sam Johnson was the last one to come along. Leaving no document, film or recording unturned, Sam was the artisan infantryman, simultaneously leader and laborer. He would often be found in the shadows mastering any instrument the band could think to send his way. The seven eventually convened in 2008 as a recording project in the way bands usually do-through a recognition of contiguous interests and mutual ambitions. Soon thereafter, Los Angeles promoters took notice and urged the group to perform live. Before long, Shadow Shadow Shade was filling the most unlikely venues-setting up shop in halls full of taxidermied mammals, in the vicinity of Impressionist and Abstract Expressionist canvases, and in the shadows of Frank Gehry massifs. For a group that seemed to have its eyes set on almost everything it came in contact with, things were finally starting to make sense. Shadow Shadow Shade recently finished its debut LP, for release later in 2010.

The Morning Benders
Equally indebted to the Shins and Brian Wilson, the Morning Benders mix sunny pop songcraft with jangling guitars, collegiate wit, and a contemporary indie ethic. Frontman Chris Chu launched the group as a solo project in 2005, using a single microphone and laptop to record his first batch of songs. The Loose Change EP arrived in September 2006, and Chu subsequently opened the Benders' doors to several of his UC Berkeley classmates, including drummer Julian Harmon, bassist Tim Or, and guitarist/organist Joe Ferrell. A second EP, Boarded Doors, appeared in early 2007 and was well received by such Bay Area publications as The SF Weekly, prompting Chu to take a part-time job as a studio engineer in order to finance an additional record. Largely produced, engineered, and mixed by Chu himself, the full-length Talking Through Tin Cans arrived in May 2008 on the newly minted +1 Records label.
Talking Through Tin Cans fared well in indie pop circles, and the band toured heavily in support of its release, occasionally serving as the opening act for bands like Death Cab for Cutie and the Kooks. After releasing an album of acoustic pop covers, the Morning Benders pulled up stakes and moved to Brooklyn, where their '60s SoCal hooks gradually gave way to a more experimental sound. With Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor serving as co-producer, the bandmates introduced their new approach with 2010's Big Echo, an ambitious album that fused Chu's pop melodies with atmospheric textures.

Cat Power
Chan Marshall stops time. She sits at a piano or lays her guitar across her lap, and whether it's a noisy club overflowing with drunks or a coffee house full of laptoppers, Chan Marshall draws all the attention in the room and makes the world stop spinning. As Cat Power, Marshall's music seems to rise from nowhere, envelop the room, then vanish; listeners know they've been hit by something but they're not sure what.
For 'The Grea...test' (not a greatest hits, but the brand-new studio album), Marshall returned to Memphis, pursuing this time the slinky Hi Records sound of the 70s, famed for its sensuous feel and beguiling rhythms. She got Al Green's guitarist and songwriting partner Mabon "Teenie" Hodges to play guitar on the whole album (Teenie co-wrote "Love and Happiness" and "Take Me to the River," among other soul classics). With Teenie came his Hi Rhythm bandmate (and brother) Leroy "Flick" Hodges, who plays on half of the album (Memphis A-team bassist Dave Smith supplements). Anchoring the band is Steve Potts, whose reputation on drums was solidified when the surviving members of Booker T. and the MG's asked him to replace their late drummer, Al Jackson. Other top Memphis musicians guest on keyboards, horns and strings. Cat Power went right to the sources, and has created her own paean to the songs and styles she grew up on.
'The Greatest' adds to Cat Power's singular sound all the elements that make an Al Green record great: Memphis horns, funky string arrangements, smooth background vocals. "Lived in Bars" is a hypnotic song that seems to start in the middle of the night and flow backward like water upstream to the source of a good time. Many songs hearken back to earlier in Cat Power's career, like the surface simplicity of "Willie"-much more complicated upon deeper listen-and like "Where Is My Love," which sounds like it could be the first song she ever wrote, and also the one to which she has always aspired. "Living Proof," on the other hand, has an almost gospel-like swing that stands in contrast to the quieter songs. The ethereal title track is the missing link between Big Star 3rd and the 21st century; if Alex Chilton were today a beautiful young woman, he'd sound like this.
Recording in Memphis is actually a return performance for Chan Marshall. She first came to the city of Southern Soul in February 1996 to record her second album, 'What Would The Community Think?' The engineer on that session was Stuart Sikes, who recorded many sessions at the Easley-McCain Studio. Sikes leapt from indie-rock notoriety to mainstream prominence with his work mixing Loretta Lynn's Jack White-produced Van Lear Rose, which won a Grammy.
This album was recorded at Ardent Studios, the renowned home to the Big Star legacy, also used by Stax as their alternate studio, and graced by everyone from Bob Dylan to the North Mississippi All Stars. And now, also, Cat Power.

Reverend Billy
And The Life After Shopping Gospel Choir
"Earth-a-lujah Earth-a-lujah Tour"
The New York-based, 20-strong anti-shopping singers-with-preacher enter the Disney Hall hell-bent on rousing the faithful from the snooze of the Shopocalypse. After "Marrying the Moon" with the former porn star now sex-positive-goddess Annie Sprinkle and her magic professor girlfriend Beth Stephens - it's on to the mall-endangered lush ...hills of Santa Cruz.
The final destination for the portable post-religious Chautauqua is the mission district of San Francisco, in the burlesque house turned house of worship, the Victoria. Fire and brimstone excerpts:
"As natural disasters accelerate, we honor and celebrate the BIGGEST LIVING THING, this wet blue ball in space that turned out to be LARGE AND IN CHARGE. You are either for the Earth or against the Earth. You either shop at Wal-Mart or you're flirting with a beautiful farmer at the weekly market.
"In each city we will embrace the Local heroes, the swappers and thrifters, the GIFT ECONOMY RADICALS. The Life After Shoppings labored over the last year in a (ultimately successful) holy battle with JP Morgan Chase Bank. Chase delivered billions of dollars to big coal companies for the deadly mining process called Mountaintop Removal. Now the Church is looking for new converts, new ways to slow down our consumption. Earth-a-lujah!
About Reverend Billy and the Church of Life After Shopping
The Church of Life After Shopping is a radical performance community dedicated to the Earth's recovery, fair and just economies, and the return of free expression to public space. We pursue these goals through resisting Consumerism and Militarism and the corporations who profit from these systems. Amen!
It should be noted that after the injunction by the Los Angeles Municiapal Courts against Reverend Billy - enjoining him from coming within 750 feet of the edge of Starbucks property - this legal directive has now lapsed. The document, which ordered "William Talen" to cease and desist from "... stalking, annoying or in any way harrassing the computerized cash registers of the Starbucks Company" is now dated. The Reverend and the Life After Shopping singers are now free to exorcise the demons from the cash tills of fake bohemia.

Vieux Farka Touré
w/Santa Cruz locals AZA
With international acclaim still pouring in from his second full-length, Fondo-one of iTunes best World Music albums of 2009, and a staple on critics' year-end pick lists as chosen by the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Village Voice and the BBC among many others-Vieux has not only distinguished himself from his famous bluesman father, Malian legend Ali Farka Touré, but begun to transcend the limitations of the worl...d music genre itself.
The release of the concert album VFT Live (Digital: 6/8/10, Physical: 6/29/10) affirms that Mali's young lion has become a legend in his own right, emerging at a crucial point in history, just as the Western world is finally beginning to take notice of West African acts like Amadou & Miriam and Omou Sangare. Not only does VFT Live capture the excitement of Vieux's much- anticipated World Cup performance, but it confirms what tens of thousands of music fans around the world already know: VFT's live show is championshipcaliber.
Though Vieux' rise to the top has happened fairly rapidly, he's paid his dues every step of the way. In 2005, his eponymous debut album established him as an up-and-coming talent and symbolically represented the passing of the torch from father to son. A 2007 remix album, UFOs Over Bamako, recontextualized Vieux's trance-inducing, bluesy style into an electronic dance format, introducing the guitarist to international audiences. After signing with American-based world music label Six Degrees, Vieux released his breakthrough sophomore effort, Fondo, in 2009.
Unanimously hailed as one of the best contemporary African music releases of the year, Fondo saw Vieux emphatically emerging out of Ali's shadow with excursions into jam-rock and electronic virtuosity, fused with the sublime elements of Malian and West African rhythms. Fondo largely made the boundaries between rock and world music immaterial - unlike many African music albums, it didn't require an advanced degree in musicology to appreciate (though that certainly doesn't hurt), just an ear for undeniable grooves and eminently hypnotic rhythms. To its credit, Fondo is as much a "guitar album" as a "world music album," yet it managed to be accessible without catering overly to Western sensibilities.
Aza
Aza is a musical band that was founded in Santa Cruz, CA by two members: Fattah Abbou and Mohamed Aoualou. Both are from Morocco and currently live in Santa Cruz, CA. They've played and studied music for over twenty years before moving to the USA seven years ago. Fattah and Mohamed are Berbers; and the Berbers or Imazighen (preferred term) are the indigenous people of North Africa whose history records date back to 3300 years ago. The band's activities are not limited to music but also promoting the Amazigh Culture. Fattah and Mohamed's efforts have always been part of the Amazigh movement and struggle to revive a culture that has been marginalized for centuries. Our goal is to raise awareness about the Amazigh culture, that it may take its place in the network of various cultures of the world. Through its artistic activities AZA has been able to introduce the Amazigh culture to people of varying ages and arouse their curiosity to know more about it.

Race to Nowhere
Hard-Hitting Documentary Exposes the Silent Epidemic in our Schools
"The intense pressure that our culture places on students, and students place on themselves, to excel academically, at the expense of enjoying learning for its own sake, can have severe effects on students' mental and emotional health, their sense of self, and their integrity," cautions Percy Abram, PhD, Head of School at Gateway in Santa Cruz. "It is important for schools, parents, and students to work together to build esteem, resilience, and a passion for learning that can be sustained well beyond the high school and college years."
Our high-pressure, high-stakes culture has invaded our schools and children's lives, creating unhealthy, disengaged, unprepared and stressed-out youth. Educators, parents, and students are embracing Race to Nowhere, a new documentary film that exposes the insidious silent epidemic in our education system. The film tells the stories of young people pushed to the brink, burned-out educators, and deeply frustrated parents.
Race to Nowhere opened in New York and Los Angeles theaters in early September. Now, Gateway, Georgiana Bruce Kirby, Mount Madonna and Santa Cruz Montessori schools are collaborating to bring this film to the Central Coast on Thursday, November 4th for a FREE showing at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. The screening will coincide with others on the same evening throughout the nation. A panel discussion will follow the screening.
Vicki Abeles, the film's producer and director, was inspired to make Race to Nowhere out of concern for her children. A mother of three and former Wall Street attorney, Abeles awakened to this crisis in a hospital emergency room as her 12- year old daughter was being treated for stress-related illness. She saw firsthand how the pressures were overwhelming not only to her own kids, but to students everywhere - in every kind of school environment and community.

MINE: The Movie
Gala Screening to Benefit Santa Cruz SPCA
Hailed as “absorbing,” “a must see,” “Oscar material” and “the best movie at SXSW,” MINE is a feature-length, independent documentary about the essential bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in modern U.S. history: Hurricane Katrina. This gripping, character-driven story follows New Orleans residents as they attempt the daunting task of trying to reunite with their pets who have been adopted by families all over the country, and chronicles the custody battles that arise when two families love the same pet. Who determines the fate of the animals—and the people—involved? A compelling meditation on race, class and the power of compassion, MINE examines how we treat animals as an extension of how we view and treat each other.
Geralyn Pezanoski, Co-Founder of Smush Media, has 12 years of experience in film and video production and makes her feature directorial debut with MINE.
Film producing credits include the narrative short, On A Tuesday (Santa Barbara & LAIFF) and Motherland (SXSW), and directing credits include the doc series Firehouse (Sony Pictures Entertainment). She lives in San Francisco with her husband Peter and their dog Nola.
The Santa Cruz SPCA, with the help of countless staff members, volunteers, foster homes, and the generosity of Doris Day, enacted one of the largest airlifts of dogs and cats from the Hurricane Katrina disaster site. Over 180 animals were saved, reunited and re-homed due to their valiant efforts. The Santa Cruz SPCA is an entirely donation-run, non-profit, no-kill shelter, that fights to insure the best possible quality of life for animals and to promote respect and reverence for all. Their mission is to strive to prevent cruelty to animals, to stop pet overpopulation, to promote community responsibility and for the humane care, treatment and well-being of all animals through adoption, education, information, and action. Proceeds from this presentation of MINE: The Movie will benefit the Santa Cruz SPCA.

Stars
Sharing a fondness for sophisticated soul and pop artists like the Smiths, New Order, and Marvin Gaye, vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman formed Stars in Toronto. Along with friends Evan Cranley (also of Big Rude Jake) and Amy Millan (who contributed to the soundtrack for the film Drowning Mona), the band relocated to New York City before returning to Canada, this time settling in Montreal. Their debut full-length, Nightsongs, was released in early 2001, with the Comeback EP following later that same year. The band's mix of pop and indie rock made Stars a popular act in Montreal, not to mention an important part of the city's burgeoning indie scene, and their success began spreading into other cities as well.
Before 2002 came to an end, the band headed back into the studio to record a sophomore effort. The soft-hued Heart was released to critical acclaim in the U.K. before Christmas; Heart appeared stateside on the Canadian label Arts & Crafts during summer 2003. The ambitious Set Yourself on Fire followed two years later, and all of its tracks were creatively remixed by the band's peers. Stars released those remixed songs on a new album, Do You Trust Your Friends?, in 2007. During July of that year, as a preemptive measure to beat any blog leaks of their next record, Stars made In Our Bedroom After the War available for download two months before its actual September release date. They also created their own label, Soft Revolution, which released the band's next studio album, The Five Ghosts, in 2010.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti
After years of recording in relative seclusion in the hills of Los Angeles , Ariel Pink (the first non-Animal Collective member on the Paw Tracks roster) makes his official Paw Tracks debut with "The Doldrums". Originally a handmade CD-R release a couple years back, "The Doldrums" by Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti was discovered by the Animal Collective during one of their west coast tours and became an immediate favorite.
Recording at home with only a guitar, keyboard, and 8-track (the drum sounds are all unbelievably created with his vocals), Ariel Pink blends Lite FM and warped lo-fi pop into something beautiful and confusing, yet highly addictive.

Rhan Wilson presents the 6th annual "An Altared Christmas"
"Wilson's first twist is to present many of those Christmas tunes played ad nauseum in almost every retail environment in America this time of year in a new format, namely a minor key" says Wallace Baine of the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Occupying a curious middle ground between rock concert and theater, "An Altared Christmas" re-...interprets these classic tunes, often exposing a very different story than we have come to expect. Imagine the song "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" sung as an insane old woman suddenly remembering what it was that made her that way, or a turned on Santa Claus reading a letter from an amorous admirer in "Santa Baby".
"Deck the Halls" tells the story of a tired, overworked single mom juggling the many chores the holidays present.
But it's not all fun and laughs. Rhan brings in some of the best local and Bay Area musicians to present soulful and rocking versions of Christmas tunes, as well.
Bluegrass mandolin, fiddle and percussion master Joe Craven (David Grisman) joins the ensemble this year as does Dale Ockerman (Doobie Brothers, White Album Ensemble). Grammy nominee Tammi Brown and Will Russ, Jr. bring in the soul factor, while regulars Patti Maxine, Celina Gutierrez, Rick Zeek, David Wallis, Janet Roitz, Olaf Schiappacasse, Ukulele Dick, Richard Stockton, Sven Davis, Michael Horne, Peter Wilde and more!
