THE MEAT PUPPETS

touring their new album
Rise to Your Knees is the first album of new material to bear the Meat Puppets name since 2000, and the first in a dozen years to reunite guitarist/singer/main songwriter Curt with his brother, bassist/co-founder Cris Kirkwood, who recently rejoined the band after a lengthy struggle with substance abuse.

The 15-song album—the resurgent Meat Puppets’ first for the independent Anodyne label—boasts the same visionary fusion of complementary contrasts that originally endeared the band to a large and loyal audience in the 1980s, when they emerged from their hometown of Phoenix, Arizona to redefine the parameters of American indie rock.

Tyva Kyzy

Tyva Kyzy (Daughters of Tuva) are the only all-female Tuvan throat-singing and folk music ensemble. Their distinctive music and performance bring together female harmonic vocal techniques with the extraordinary sounds of throat-singing. The group performs with a wide range of traditional and legendary folk instruments such as igil, a horse headed fiddle, the cha-khomus, a bow and arrow mouth-harp which was recently revived from legend and their signature instrument the chadagan which resembles a hammered dulcimer. Their vividly textured songs and colorful performance fill audiences with energy and awe evoking the traditions and sonic landscapes of the Central Asian steppe. To this day throat-singing by women is still considered taboo and sometimes forbidden in Tuva. Nonetheless the group has made great strides both at home and around the world, they are valued for the originality of their repertoire and the excellence of their instrumentation. With humorous joy, nurturing sweetness and thundering power, Tyva Kyzy brings something new to the overtone rich melodies and natural rhythms of today's Tuvan music.

“These rare women throat-singers go far beyond novelty and shock value. They are outstanding musicians.” Janos Gereben, SFVG

Tommy Emmanuel

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel has a professional career that spans over four decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy's unique style - he calls it simply "finger style" - is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers.

Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to pick up the guitar as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans. In 1999, Chet honored Tommy Emmanuel with the title of "Certified Guitar Player" for his lifetime contribution to the instrument, a rare honor shared by only three other people in the world (Jerry Reed, Steve Wariner and John Knowles). Atkins eventually recorded with Tommy in 1996 on "The Day the Finger Pickers Took Over the World", for which Emmanuel received his first Grammy award nomination. This was also Atkins last recording.

“Traditional Cuban classics meet soaring joyful vocals and an impressive horn and percussion section driving a booty-shaking party guaranteed to pick up your mood."
— San Francisco Spectrum

Get ready for an incendiary performance by Grammy-nominated Tiempo Libre, a white-hot Latin band that blends traditional Afro-Cuban beats with hip-hop, house, and jazz in an irresistible, dance-inducing music style called timba. When these seven extraordinary musicians began jamming during their free time (tiempo libre) back in 2001, their goal was to create the first authentic all-Cuban timba band in the US, and to share the musical heritage of their native country. In the process, they have reinterpreted and reinvigorated traditional Cuban music with a youthful, modern sound and forged a new style born from their Cuban roots and their own American experiences. MIKE MARSHALL & DAROL ANGER, WITH VÄSEN

Sponsored by Barry Swenson Builder
Presented in partnership with Community Music School and the Celtic Society.

“…[Väsen] transform[s] traditional Scandinavian folk music…into sweeping improvisational sound scapes. [Their performance with] Marshall and Anger…was my pick [for] most sublime set of the festival.”
— Dan Ruby, www.festivalpreview.com

Fans of each other’s work for years, Darol Anger and mike Marshall, two major architects of new acoustic music, and Väsen, Sweden’s most influential instrumental ensemble, finally met at the 2004 Lotus World Music Festival in Bloomington, Indiana. LEON REDBONE

We don't know his birthday. We'd only be guessing at an alma matter. And nobody ever told us, for sure, if he went by any other name. But for the last three decades and counting, nobody could mistake him for any other performer, nor singer, nor guitarist, nor character.

Typically performing these days solo or duo with piano, Redbone's musical repertoire can hover between Dylan's "Living the Blues," Jelly Roll Morton's "I Hate a Man Like You," Eddy Arnold's "Bouquet of Roses" and the childhood folk favorite "Polly Wolly Doodle." Known more for covering other artists’ songs, the musician admits he comes up with a few tunes of his own every decade, but counters with a grin, "I think that they're all mine to begin with."

"Redbone's own low-slung, bluesy baritone recalls an older, simpler world of music - from 1899-1935. Chicago Sun.

Comedian Richard Stockton will open and M.C. the show ; host of the Planet Cruz Comedy Hour, he delivers a ballistic, unique take on the human potential movement. Sometimes wild and animated, (two years on BET’s “Live From LA” as “the white guy”) and sometimes observational and warm (“True Life Stories” for HBO,) he says his comedy is moving into “…Baby Boomer Theory. My extended adolescence has been rudely interrupted by my mid-life crisis.”

TINARIWEN

Tinariwen are guitar-poets from the southern Sahara desert. They are icons of freedom and resistance among their own people, the nomadic Touareg of the Sahara. The word ‘Tinariwen’ is the plural of Ténéré which simply means ‘desert’, in Tamashek, the language of the Touareg.

Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, founder of the group ;
“The desert is my home. I’ve never been attracted by the idea of emigrating for Paris or Los Angeles. It’s in the desert that I feel I belong. You have to live simply in the desert. It’s the only way. Simplicity is Freedom.”

New surf documentary : BLUEGREEN

Filmed, edited and produced in 2007 and 2008, BlueGreen approaches this question by sitting down with 13 folks who have been lucky enough, passionate enough, dedicated enough or some combination of these to look deeper into our bearing with the ocean as humans. These folks vary, from scientists to activists, athletes to enthusiasts, religious types to technological types. But they all have one thing in common. The ocean is the touchstone of their existence.

The film stars Layne Beachley, Keith Malloy, Robert August, Liz Clark, Sean Collins, Nachum Shifren and more. It is narrated by Santa Cruz's own Robert 'Wingnut' Weaver. All these folks serve up incredible surf (Layne on her way to her 7th world title) and inspiring stories about their, and our, connections to the big BlueGreen.

Show time: 7:30, Doors at 7:00 pm,
Ttickets: $8 at the door.

Additionally the Santa Cruz Surfrider Chapter will be auctioning off a brand new surfboard to help raise funds for it's local campaigns. The remaining dates of the BlueGreen West Coast Tour are posted on: www.bluegreenconnection.com

McCOY TYNER TRIO

“…a man who, like Coltrane, refuses to stop exploring” – Jazz Times

It would be difficult to imagine the sound of jazz piano had there never been a McCoy Tyner; his pivotal contributions to the form cannot be overstated. Even before departing John Coltrane’s band in 1965, he had begun headlining dates for Impulse and Blue Note to yield masterpieces like The Real McCoy and Tender Moments. In the forty years hence, he has never settled for less than innovation, reliably maintaining a potent sense of mood and melody whether withstanding frontline forays into stellar regions or taking solo flights over the entire range of his instrument. Tyner has achieved a level of virtuosity and grace all too rare in contemporary music. Get tickets early for this certain sell out.

A benefit concert to raise money for music programs in the Santa Cruz City Schools. The “Don’t Miss This Show” Show is a showcase of talented young Santa Cruz performers. THE AVETT BROTHERS

Magnolia Electric Company supports
If you put your ear to the street, you can hear the rumble of the world in motion; people going to and from work, to school, to the grocery store. You may even hear the whisper of their living rooms, their conversation, their complaints, and if you're lucky, their laughter. If you're almost anywhere in America , you'll hear something different, something special, something you recognize but haven't heard in a long time. It is the sound of a real celebration.
What you are hearing is the love for a music. It is the unbridled outcry of support for a song that sings to the heart, that dances with the soul. The jubilation is in the theaters, the bars, the music clubs, the festivals. The love is for a band.
The songs are honest: just chords with real voices singing real melodies. But, the heart and the energy with which they are sung, is really why people are talking, and why so many sing along.
They are a reality in a world of entertainment built with smoke and mirrors, and when they play, the common man can break the mirrors and blow the smoke away, so that all that's left behind is the unwavering beauty of the songs. That's the commotion, that's the celebration, and wherever The Avett Brothers are tonight, that's what you'll find.

LUCERO

Black Joe Lewis opens

Show moved to The Crepe Place across the street

Lucero : They're a band that doesn't have fans as much as they have diehards who come to every show and scream the words to every song from their classic albums like Tennessee and That Much Further West. They're road warriors who live in their tour van and have had their touring experiences chronicled in the Dreaming In America DVD.

They're a band that has been tagged as alt-country and punk country. They're a band that has written plenty of songs about girls and guitars, and about life, love, drinking, and life, love, and drinking while on the road. They expanded their lyrical palette on 2005's critically acclaimed Nobody's Darlings and in 2006 they re-released the hard-to-find home-recorded gem, The Attic Tapes.
But on Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, Lucero prove themselves to be something much simpler than that: a tried n true American rock n roll band.

FUEL, the film

Winner Sundance Film Festival 2008 Best documentary

America is addicted to oil....It's time for an intervention.

FUEL is an insightful portrait of America’s addiction to oil and an uplifting testament to the immediacy of new energy solutions. Director, Josh Tickell, a young activist, shuttles us on a whirlwind journey to track the rising domination of the petrochemical industry — from Rockefeller’s strategy to halt Ford’s first ethanol cars to Vice President Cheney's petrochemical company sponsored energy legislation — and reveals a gamut of available solutions to "repower America" — from vertical farms that occupy skyscrapers to algae facilities that turn wastewater into fuel. Tickell and a surprising array of environmentalists, policy makers, and entertainment notables take us through America’s complicated, often ignominious energy past and illuminate a hopeful, achievable future, where decentralized, sustainable living is not only possible, it’s imperative.

“Out of the Blue "

This historical documentary, directed by Santa Cruz filmmaker Chris Thompson, features archival footage and interviews with the original Santa Cruz Surfing Club members.

In the late 1930's the sport of surfing finally arrived to stay in Northern California when a small group of surfers from Los Angeles in college in San Jose began to venture over to the coast and surf the frigid waters along the small beach town of Santa Cruz. The local kids soon became inspired to take up the sport for themselves with no formal instruction, making their own equipment and banding together to help each other along and overcome the elements. Eventually, more of the town's youth would join in and The Santa Cruz Surfing Club was formed, complete with a boardhouse and clubhouse that became the center of the social scene on the beach until World War II changed their lives and brought a sudden end to a memorable era in California's history.

Strange Cadence: a distinct view of Shakespeare Santa Cruz

a film by CM Griffiths

In the summer of 2008, filmmaker CM Griffiths had unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s core staff and Company as they prepared to open their 27th season. In the filmmaker’s words, Strange Cadence: a distinct view of Shakespeare Santa Cruz “began as a simple documentary but became an amazing journey witnessing the unfolding of a dramatic season that held social redemption and a common camaraderie within a company of artists.”

One of Artistic Director Marco Barricelli’s objectives as the creative leader of Shakespeare Santa Cruz is to “pull back the curtain” on the making of great theatre. “The level of curiosity and sophistication among theatre-goers has evolved. It used to be that an audience member came and went to a performance and was perfectly satisfied within that contained experience. Now, audiences are interested in a more engaged and dynamic experience; they are eager to dig deeper and connect with the artists, to travel alongside us on our journey.”

The 2008 season documented in Strange Cadence included the productions of two Shakespeare works in the famed outdoor Glen, Romeo and Juliet and All’s Well That Ends Well, plus two contemporary works on the indoor Mainstage, the searing drama Burn This by Lanford Wilson and the Bay Area première of Itamar Moses’ Bach at Leipzig. The film will take the viewer on a three-month journey that began with the first Company meeting and wrapped up with closing night.

The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with Marco Barricelli and CM Griffiths and an Opportunity Drawing.

PACIFIC RIM FILM FESTIVAL

All screenings are FREE OF CHARGE and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served. For further information go towww.pacrimfilmfestival.org.

1:00 pm Black Grace (New Zealand, 2007, 56 min., English)
When Black Grace, a dance troupe of Pacific Islander and Maori men, first burst onto the New Zealand stage in 1995 they were a revelation. Fusing traditional Pacific and contemporary dance forms with athleticism and grace, they electrified audiences. Led by Artistic Director Neil Ieremia, Black Grace evolved from a crew of Neil’s “mates” into one of New Zealand’s national treasures and conquered the world’s dance festivals culminating with Jacob’s Pillow in the Berkshire hills of Massachusetts. This film follows Black Grace’s journey from Cannon’s Creek, a small town outside of Wellington, New Zealand to the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the oldest one of its kind in North America.

2:15 pm Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority (USA, 2008, 57 min., English)
Sponsored by Watsonville/Santa Cruz JACL
In 1965, Patsy Takemoto Mink became the first woman of color in the United States Congress. Seven years later, she ran for the US presidency and was the driving force behind Title IX, an Education Amendment that became landmark legislation transforming women’s opportunities in higher education and athletics. Mink was an Asian American woman who fought racism and sexism while redefining US politics, and her tumultuous and often lonely political journey reveals what can be at stake for female politicians that defy expectations, push limits and adhere to their principles. This film illuminates how Mink’s daring to remain “ahead of the majority” in her beliefs enabled groundbreaking changes for the rights of the disenfranchised. A woman of the people as well as a pioneer, a patriot and also an outcast, Patsy Mink’s intriguing story embodies the history, ideals and spirit of America.

3:30 pm Hawai’i A Voice for Sovereignty (USA, 83 min., English)
Hawaii A Voice for Sovereignty , is a journey led by the indigenous people themselves, which takes the viewer into rarely seen ancient lifestyles where spirituality, culture, and care for the land form a sacred and sustaining bond between humankind and the
natural world. We experience their quest to maintain their self-sustainability through their culture, spirituality and connection to the land and natural resources. Cultural, social, economic, and ecological issues of the Hawaiians and their relationship to the land has been at the forefront of the native Hawaiians struggles since the takeover by the United States in 1893 and is at the forefront of their goals to prevent their culture and people from vanishing today.

7:00 pm Water (Canada/India, 2005, 117 min., Hindi with English sub-titles)
Sponsored by Staff of Life
Set in 1938 in the twilight of colonial India, this film focuses on a group of women condemned to spend the rest of their lives in an ashram on the banks of the Ganges because they are widows. WATER, the third in the Elements Trilogy of films by writer and director Deepa Mehta, is a controversial piece portraying the institutionalized oppression of an entire class of women and the way patriarchal imperatives inform religious belief. Serene on the surface yet roiling underneath, the film neatly parallels the plight of widows under Hindu fundamentalism to that of India under British colonialism. Though Gandhi and his followers are an insistent background presence, the movie is never didactic, trusting the simple rhythms of the women's lives to
tell their story.

The 21st Annual Pacific Rim Film Festival Benefit Event Featuring Native Hawaiian hula performed by Ka Lei Wehi O Ka Mailelauloa - The Hula School of Santa Cruz followed by Rick Bacigalupi‘s documentary film

“Toward Living Pono”

"Toward Living Pono" is an hour-long documentary that follows internationally acclaimed film and stage actor Jason Scott Lee on his intentional journey from mega-movie stardom to living sustainably on his off-the-grid taro farm 4,000 feet up the slopes of Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii. The camera tags along with Jason as he goes about his work, whether he's driving through busy downtown Singapore on the way to the next film shoot or tending his remote taro patches using only the methods of natural farming. An intimate portrait of one of Hawaii's most beloved celebrities, the story encompasses the universal issues Jason is confronting: Materialism and alienation in western society, environmental stewardship, preservation of indigenous culture, youth advocacy, and living pono - with the traditional values of righteousness and respect for ancestors, neighbors and the sacred land.

Blind Pilot

Opening: Mimicking Birds

The band Blind Pilot literally rode a pair of bicycles to success. The folk-pop outfit, formed by singer-guitarist Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski, has taken two bike tours, playing its music all along the West Coast. The first of these two tours was supposed to run from Vancouver all the way down to the Mexican border. Unfortunately, the trip was cut short when the band's bikes were stolen outside San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. Blind Pilot is on another tour now, with six members, and this time they're all traveling by van. The band seems to bring a similar philosophy as its bike tours, making the most out of available resources. Despite the challenges of the road, Blind Pilot has found its own set of rewards along the way.

Little Dragon

Milton Nascimento

with special guest Claudia Acuña opening

"...frequently acclaimed as Brazil's greatest musician." - All About JazzMilton Nascimento's many collaborations with Herbie Hancock, dating back to the 1969 CTI album Courage, have made an indelible mark on the history of both jazz and Brazilian music. As a singer/songwriter, Nascimento weaves a startling blend of musical influences, including Brazilian and African folk strains, European classical music, and the Brazilian bossa nova. His Portuguese lyrics range from themes of universal love and the spiritual unification of the child and adult, to expressions of the struggle of oppressed people in Latin America and throughout the world. An international array of artists has covered his songs, but with a gorgeous multi-octave voice and sumptuous melodic imagination the Brazilian superstar is the most effective interpreter of his own music. Chilean singer/songwriter Claudia Acuña opens the show.

An Evening with Comedian Christopher Titus

benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Cruz

Christopher Titus jokes about things most comics would find impossible to make funny. Custody battles, insanity, family suicides, heart attacks, and fist fighting his father are all topics to be confronted, not hidden from. "I think our collective psychosis is hilarious. With the world moving as fast as it is, if we weren't dysfunctional, we couldn't function," says Titus.

Christopher is the most rare of comics in that his material is edgy and pushes the envelope, but still accessible and meaningful to the common audience. After years of experimentation with dark and personal storytelling, he debuted his one man show, "Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding" at the Hudson Theater in Los Angeles. The packed house gave him a standing ovation. Already a standout at the 1996, 1997 and 1999 Montreal's Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, in 2000 Christopher brought Norman Rockwell to the Festival for a sold-out run at the prestigious Centaur Theatre.

Titus was the star, executive producer and co-creator of the Fox sitcom “Titus,” which ran from 2000-2002. Time called Titus “brutal, hilarious and audacious,” while Newsday called him “TV’s most original comic voice since Seinfeld.”

MARIZA

Mariza’s latest album “Terra” is the first masterpiece of a new breathing cycle. Mariza sums it all up in one word: “truth”. And she adds: “During seven years of international tours, I had the chance of discovering other peoples and cultures. I watched and I listened. I learned. This is my moment. This is my truth. I’ve always been true to myself, and I’ve always been true to my fans. And I wanted this album to show them my progress as a singer and a human being. My two previous albums, ‘Transparente’ and ‘Concerto Em Lisboa’ were like the end of a cycle to me. This new album, I’ve decided to call it ‘Terra’. Why? Maybe because I always have my feet firmly planted on the ground, and also because recording it was like going on a musical journey. Inevitably...”

RINGING UP

Music of Three Worlds 20th Anniversary DVD release

Free Premiere BELL CONCERT VIDEO Directed and Edited by Eric Thiermann

Sonos Handbell Ensemble James Meredith, Artistic Director
Featuring cellist Emil Miland
Sonos leads us through music of three worlds: Europe, Asia and America. With stunning virtuosity this contemporary ensemble performs the famous Bach Toccata in D Minor, Gershwins’s beloved Porgy and Bess, James Meredith’s groundbreaking Kodo Tryptich and Smirti, his hauntingly intense elegy on the bombing of the World Trade Center with cellist Emil Miland, and more.

Throughout a two-decade history, this touring and recording group has attracted the attention of a wide range of composers and performing artists. Grammy-winning composer Libby Larsen wrote Hell’s Belles for Sonos and Grammy-nominated super star mezzo-soprano, Frederica von Stade. Sonos premiered Yahweh, a major work by Daniel Feinsmith for string quartet and bells with the Grammy-winning Kronos Quartet. Virtual reality pioneer Jaron Lanier masterfully combined handbells, gamelan orchestra and drums for Sonos, Pusaka Sunda and San Jose Taiko in Navigator Tree that was featured on a PBS documentary. Many other composers like Berkeley’s Ellen Hoffmann and William Ludtke as well as Britain’s Ian Hÿtch have contributed substantial works for Sonos to perform with orchestra. Running time: 64 minutes

Frank Zappa (1940-1993) was an American composer who immersed himself in his craft with equal parts vision and vigor. Over the course of 80 albums—first as the leader of the Mothers Of Invention and then as a solo artist—Zappa raised the bar in a rock world that spent most of its time embracing the ordinary. His music was fearless, imbued with an impeccable sense of technique, but never, ever at the expense of emotion.

End of the Line Film Screening

Where have all the fish gone?

The End of the Line story is based on a book written by Charles Clover, environmental editor of London’s Daily Telegraph, who showed that fishing with modern technology has put us in a dire situation where we are very close to destroying entire ocean ecosystems. In a single human lifetime, we have brought about huge changes in the ocean, through overfishing and destructive fishing practices. This film, along with FishWise and Save our Shores, offers solutions to this problem and ways to get involved in the fight for fisheries worldwide.

The film will be introduced by our Assemblymember Bill Monning, a supporter of sustainable fisheries who recently sponsored and help pass bill AB 1217 to support the certification and marketing of sustainable California fisheries. The film will be followed by a panel discussion on fisheries issues with local experts in science, policy, market based efforts and seafood entrepreneurship. To finish off the evening, we will have a raffle with some great prizes from the organizations involved.

Show Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm
Ticket Prices: $3

The 'White' Album live!!

The White Album Ensemble returns to it's Rio Theatre roots, their very first show of 2004 and namesake revisited, the Beatles' "White" album, reproduced in its entirety and original running order.
As they approach the project with fresh ears, and 5 years of having done all the other post-touring era Beatles albums from "Rubber Soul" to "Let It Be", they've decided to use 'real' instruments as much as possible, strings, harp, and horns. Santa Cruz' own Barry Phillips will lead the quartet, he is a regular with Ravi Shankar, and has performed on cello with Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr on the "Concert for George". Special guests will include timb Harris of Estradasphere on violin and trumpet, Ella Bacon on Viola, Esther Centers on violin, Jesse Autumn on harp, and many more. From the rocking "Back in the USSR" 's horns, to the powdered wig baroque charm of "Piggies" or "Martha My Dear"- once again, no expense (except perhaps a real jet landing) is spared in pursuit of your listening pleasure.

A raffle benefitting Guitars, not Guns, and Musicscool scholarship fund will be held. 60's attire, fringe, paisley, kaleidoscopic sunglasses highly recommended!

Show time: doors at 7 PM, show at 8 PM.
Tickets: www.ticketweb.com
Advance Tickets: available at Streetlight records, Santa Cruz

Wednesday, December 30th- New Years Eve's Eve 2009

"Beatles and Beyond"

For this show, the band mixes up some of their, and your favorite Beatles songs with solo hits by Ringo Starr, George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney - including "Live and Let Die" from the James Bond film, "Instant Karma", "Isn't It A Pity", "Photograph", and many more. As 'Abbey Road" was the last real Beatles record, this represents a '70s imaginary Beatles record. They will complete the cycle of group, breakup, and solo careers; with arguably the 'last' Beatles song, the posthumously recorded and co- written "Free as a Bird", John Lennon's demo that the rest overdubbed and contributed to in the 90's for the Anthology.

A raffle benefitting Guitars, not Guns, and Musicscool scholarship fund will be held. 60's attire, fringe, paisley, kaleidoscopic sunglasses highly recommended!
