MEETING RESISTANCE

documentary film
If we were invaded by a foreign occupier would we resist and how? Would you supply food, provide a safe haven, give money, or stock ammo?

The co-directors Molly Bingham and Steve Connors are two free-lance journalists who were on the ground in Iraq before the U.S. military offensive was launched in 2003. Shortly after the U.S. invasion and President Bush's declaration of victory, the directors began to witness how the insurgency on the ground was far more intense and different than what was being reported in the US media. Specifically, they questioned the conventional wisdom in Washington that a defeated Republican Guard and foreign fighters fueled the guerilla warfare.

This is the only documentary on the war, that I’m aware of, that focuses exclusively on what drives the opposition – this is not a debate about the legitimacy of the war and, therefore, only includes the voices of Iraqis. “Meeting Resistance” gives you a first hand look at why everyday Iraqis are joining a sophisticated guerilla movement determined to destabilize and drive out the US presence in Iraq. The directors make hard to ignore the obvious question: Can this kind of resistance ever be defeated and if not, what and how do we bring an end to this chapter of failed neo-con inspired "democracy building?

Show time: 7:00 pm
Tickets: $8 day of show

There will be a question and answer session after the film
Tickets will be sold night of show at the ticket booth $8

MIRAH and THE BLOW

Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn has been at the heart of the vibrant Northwest independent music scene ever since her debut album ‘You Think It’s Like This But Really It’s Like This’. A collection of her own 4-track recordings alongside collaborations with Phil Elverum of The Microphones/Mt. Eerie, the album became an instant classic. A follow-up to her first release, the stunning ‘Advisory Committee’ (2001) cemented Mirah’s place in the alternative music canon. These albums were an exploration of the territories beyond lo-fi, aiming to transcend mere technical limitations and to push the boundaries of ‘indie-rock’ towards a more meaningful communicative goal. Phil Elverum’s sound experiments collided with Mirah’s striking lyrical poise and unabashed emotional honesty and the resulting mix proved quite evocative. 2003 saw the release of ‘Songs from the Black Mountain Music Project,’ the result of a self-imposed artists-in-seclusion collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist and musician Ginger Brooks Takahashi. Mirah began working with Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson of Seattle’s Black Cat Orchestra in 2003 and the release of a collection of cover songs followed. The album ‘To All We Stretch the Open Arm’ was conceived as an anti-war statement and included renditions of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Story of Isaac’ and Kurt Weill’s ‘What Keeps Mankind Alive.’ Mirah’s third solo album ‘C’mon Miracle’ (2004) combined the ever-present youthful splendor of her earlier works with a more mature stylistic component which led many critics to hail it as her best work to date.

SPUTNIK MANIA

New documentary film uses long-lost footage and newly declassified information to show the awe and fear Americans felt following Soviet launch WASHINGTON, D.C. — Fifty years ago, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into outer space on Oct. 4, 1957. Its beep-beep broadcast a profound change in the world. The shock waves from that event continue to this day. A new documentary feature length film, Sputnik Mania, has just been completed to coincide with the anniversary of this defining moment in human history. The film tells the whole story of the launch of Sputnik and what happened to America during the following year. It presents not only previously lost footage from the ‘50s, but also an extraordinary collection of big-name and unknown interviews as well as recently declassified insights into the high-level decisions that followed the dawn of
the space age and launched the superpowers on a missile race.

The launch of Sputnik initially thrilled Americans. But within a surprisingly short time, that enthusiasm descended into fear and anxiety as politicians and the media whipped the public into a frenzy over Sputnik and the rocket that launched it -- a rocket that could easily have been used as a Soviet ICBM missile attacking our cities. Then-Senator Lyndon Johnson compared Sputnik to another Pearl Harbor. Only months after Sputnik’s launch, 60% of Americans thought that nuclear war was imminent and that 50% of the American population would likely die (Gallup Poll, April 1958). Throughout 1958, as tensions increased, the U.S. and U.S.S.R. between them tested a nuclear bomb in the atmosphere every three days. Americans were told by government leaders to build personal bomb shelters and stockpile emergency supplies. By June 10, 1958, with America’s first satellite also in space, tens of millions participated in a nationwide underground civil defense drill.
FILM MAKER DAVID HOFFMAN will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions afterwards.

Show time: 5:00 pm
Tickets will be $10 at the door Children 10 and under FREE ,
Proceeds of the film to benefit Spring Hill Elementary School.

FRANS LANTING

ALBATROSSES: BIRDS OF LEGEND IN A TIME OF TROUBLE

Of all the animals Frans Lanting has worked with, few have amazed him like albatrosses have. For this year's presentation, he will tell us a story that connects the legends of the albatross's past with new knowledge about their present and concern over the future of the greatest of all seabirds.

Albatrosses are extraordinary beings. Soaring on wingspans of up to 11 feet, albatrosses roam the world's oceans and come ashore only to mate and nest on faraway, windswept isles. Some aspects of their lives parallel those of humans more closely than almost any other animal. They live for many decades; they spend years in courtship with mates to whom they remain devoted until death; they grieve. And they make choices not only about mates but also about the destinations of complex, multi-thousand-mile feeding trips over the open sea. Their powers of flight are legendary and have been the source of many tales.

In this presentation, Frans will take us to some of the most remote islands on the planet to bring us up close to these majestic seabirds that have inspired him like few other wild creatures have. This show will feature brand-new images and experiences from a wide-ranging assignment Frans recently completed for National Geographic, published in the December 2007 issue of the magazine. This presentation will also include video coverage by Christine Eckstrom and the research efforts of UCSC scientist Dr. Scott Shaffer, who has tracked albatrosses across the North Pacific. Proceeds from this presentation will benefit the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Long Marine Laboratory.

Festival highlights include: River Ways explores the lives of regular working people affected by the issue of whether to remove four dams on the Snake River in Eastern Washington; In eDump, we find that at least half of the e-waste collected for recycling in North America gets exported, much of it to China, where it ends up polluting communities and harming the public health; In Last Yoik in Saami Forests?, we learn of the alliance between Saami reindeer herders and Greenpeace and their Forest Rescue Station in the wilderness of Inari and the conflicts with the loggers’ party Antiterror Infocamp; Just a Lawn follows the evolution of the lawn and examines the complex reasons for the lawn's rise in popularity in the 1940s and 50s and the rise in pesticide use for controlling some of the 'perfect' lawn's enemies; and in Spirits of Orchid Island, we meet The Tao people who came from the Philippines nearly a thousand years ago. Their guardianship of both forest and ocean has preserved the island’s wild nature as they still harvest the sea from hand-made boats, and many spiritual beliefs and links with nature survive, despite the modernizing influence of nearby Taiwan.

National Lampoon's new film

ELECTRIC APRICOT : Quest for Festeroo

From legendary Primus bassist Les Claypool comes National Lampoon presents Electric Apricot: Quest For Festeroo, a spoof about jam bands told in the style of
This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind.   In the spring of 2005, Les Claypool set forth to make a documentary reflecting an element of contemporary music culture which had yet to be fully examined. The notion was to capture something raw and original. Les searched for something unpretentious and genuine and he yearned to make a film that would stand out from other music documentaries. Who he found was Electric Apricot and what he achieved was enlightenment. Unexpectedly, while searching for enlightenment the duality of existence was unveiled.

Striving for the glory of the Grateful Dead and Phish is Electric Apricot, Claypool's fictional traveling jam band. The film follows the journey of Electric Apricot as they hit the road to make it to the pinnacle event of their career, Festeroo. The members of the band go by the assumed names, Steve “Aiwess” Trouzdale on bass and vocals, Steve "Gordo" Gordon on guitar and vocals, Herschal Tambor Brillstien on keyboards and vocals, and
Lapland "Lapdog" Miclovik on drums and vocals.

THE AVETT BROTHERS

The Avett Brothers are an americana acoustic rock band that originated in Concord, North Carolina. The band is made up of two brothers, Seth Avett and Scott Avett who play the guitar and banjo, respectively, and Bob Crawford, who plays the stand-up bass. They are often joined on tour by cellist Joe Kwon. Risen from the ashes of Seth and Scott's former rock band Nemo, The Avett Brothers combine old-time country, bluegrass, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, honky tonk and ragtime to produce a sound described by The Washington Post as "post civil-war modern rock", or by other reviewers as "grungegrass". The group themselves eschews labels, feeling that "none would do the music the justice. It's simply left up to each person to extract his or her own account from the Avett's music."

This is the only live seminar that offers a truly unbiased, scientific view of vaccines. In this evening presentation we will take a close look into an area that becomes increasingly more important to the health of our children every year, and provide straight answers to such questions as

- why are there now 68 vaccines mandated to our children?
- why were there only 20 in 1980?
- why is the number increasing every year?
- why are no vaccines tested for carcinogenicity?
- where did the autism epidemic come from all of a sudden?
- what did Robert F Kennedy Jr find out about mercury?
- what do the manufacturers put in vaccines?
- how has the economics of vaccines changed in the past decade?
- whatever happened to anthrax, SARS, avian flu and smallpox vaccine?
- what percent of parents are opting out of vaccines for their child?
- why would they do that?
- why does most of what we see in media support more vaccines?
- what are the dangers according to the manufacturers themselves?

"Every new mother and father should have the opportunity to read The Sanctity of Human Blood before subjecting their children to mandatory vaccinations." - Kilmer McCully, MD

Yungchen Lhamo

Yungchen Lhamo is a refugee from Tibet, who escaped across the Himalayas to India, where she first started singing. After years of international touring with the blessing of the Dalai Lama, Yungchen has quietly established herself as one of the world's most exquisite voices, the purity and scale of her singing conjuring up the vastness of her Himalayan homeland. Yungchen's name was given to her by a Tibetan lama when she was a baby and translates to "Goddess of Melody and Song." Her four albums have met with critical praise worldwide, alternately described as "mesmerizing," "spine-tingling," "transcendent," and "beautifully evocative." Her songs take listeners on an emotive journey across vast plateaus, soaring over vistas with a transformative power and presence no doubt informed by her remarkable life story.

Yungchen has performed in support of many Organizations, including Tibet House New York, Tibet Relief Fund, and such aid groups as Amnesty International, Walk Against Want, Reebok Human Rights Awards, and Survival International. The Cannabis Cantata

The Cannabis Cantata, by award winning Santa Cruz composer Joel Ford, is an avant-garde jazz/rock/reggae opera inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Coffee Cantata. Ford's smokin' libretto presents a satirical twist on Bach's original coffee theme substituting marijuana as today's illicit substance. Ford's original upbeat score infuses the libretto with lively melodies and rhythms evocative of post-bop jazz and a ripple of reggae. The opera's nine-part jazz band features Paul Cantos on saxophone and Renzo Staiano on guitar. The cast includes the vocal talents of Rebecca Stuhlbarg, John Seales, Eric Iverson, and Claire Gendler. Directed and produced by Joel Ford.

Big Time burlesque & Vaudeville
The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is both pleasant and formidable terrain.  They require a sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed – followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. SALMAN RUSHDIE

The Enchantress of Florence
Salman Rushdie is one of the world literature’s leading voices.
A British-Indian essayist and novelist, his award-winning works include Midnight’s Children, Haroun and the Sea of Stories and Shalimar the Clown. He is perhaps best known for his novel The Satanic Verses which, in 1988, provoked violent reaction from Middle Eastern Muslim communities and a fatwa against his life issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini, forcing him to spend a decade largely underground. In recent years, Salman Rushdie has been more visible publicly, speaking out against Islamic extremism, as well as lecturing on his continued successes as the author who can tell stories that span the East and the West better than almost anyone writing today.

In The Enchantress of Florence, Salman Rushdie draws on more than seven years of research, bringing together two seemingly different cities—the hedonistic Mughal capital, in which the brilliant emperor Akbar wrestles daily with questions of belief, desire, and treachery, and the equally sensual city of Renaissance Florence, where Niccolò Machiavelli takes a starring role. A virtuosic feat of storytelling that mixes political, romance and magic, Rushdie's novel is a reflection on war and politics, gender and society, fantasy and rumor, individuality and public life, and how the brutal past still influences our present world.

• With purchase of one copy of The Enchantress of Florence, up to two event tickets can be purchased at the reduced price of $12.00 each.
• Event tickets without book purchase are $30.00 each.

CONOR OBERST and THE MYSTIC VALLEY BAND

Conor Oberst is set to release a solo album on August 5th.
This recording was made in Tepoztlán, Morelos, México during the months of January and February 2008. In Tepoztlán, a place known for Aztec Magic and Extra-Terrestrial Sightings, a temporary studio was created in a mountain villa called Valle Místico at the outskirts of town. It was produced by Conor Oberst with much help from engineer and long time associate Andy LeMaster. A special band was assembled for the recording, known amongst themselves and to friends as The Mystic Valley Band. It was there at Valle Místico that Conor and the band lived and worked for that time in near perfect harmony, often unaware of the hour or the day. The result is his first solo album in thirteen years, following Water (1993), Here’s To Special Treatment (1994) and Soundtrack To My Movie (1995). In that time he has recorded and preformed in many bands and musical projects including Commander Venus, Park Ave., Desaparecidos, and most notably Bright Eyes, his main musical vehicle for the past decade.
Conor Oberst will be touring this album throughout the summer and has already announced an appearance at August’s Reading & Leeds festival.

Habib Koité & Bamada

Habib is from the noble Khassonké griot lineage of Mali. His stirring, evocative music resonates with the emotional depth and spirit of the modern African experience. Habib's artistry and powerful personality earned him the adoration of fans such as Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, both of whom ended up visiting Habib in Mali. Habib takes some unique approaches to playing the guitar. He tunes his instrument to the pentatonic scale and plays on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni. At other times Habib plays music that sounds closer to the blues or flamenco, two styles he studied under Khalilou Traoré a veteran of the legendary Afro-Cuban band Maravillas du Mali. Unlike the griots, his singing style is restrained and intimate with varying cadenced rhythms and melodies. Reviews "His music is stuningly beautiful and lyrical, rooted in African tradition, yet broadly accessible. Koité is fast becoming an international star."

The RESIDENTS

present BUNNY BOY

The Residents latest performance, THE BUNNY BOY, will launch as a world tour in the fall of 2008. The show will combine music from the group's upcoming album, THE BUNNY BOY (Mute/SDR), with video taken from THE BUNNY BOY internet series, premiering early in September, 2008.

The story centers around an eccentric character, the bunny boy, whose search for his missing brother compels him to post videos on the internet as a "cry for help." As the story evolves, it opens up to interaction between the bunny boy and his audience, causing the narrative to twist and turn in odd and unpredictable ways. Spanning a gap between insanity and self realization, the loony, but affable bunny boy soon finds himself pursuing a goal no less vital than saving the world from Armageddon. It's a wild ride.

The stage design, by Chris McGregor (CUBE E, Wormwood, Icky Flix) will feature a unique "schizophrenic" layout that allows performers to move between musical, video, and theatric realms. Barraging the audience with imagery and sound, in typical Residents' style the performance radiates and savors the quality of a surreal circus. The group will perform their music live while integrating other visual and performance elements into an evening of riveting and unique entertainment

Stars' music has been described as "beautiful, eloquent indie pop", characterized by lush instrumentation, nimble production and mixing, narrative lyrics, and soft but nuanced vocals. The band's style has evolved from an electronic-pop sound as heard on Nightsongs (released on the Le Grand Magistery record label) to more rock-based instrumentation on their last two full-length albums, reflecting the permanent additions of singer-guitarist Amy Millan and bassist Evan Cranley on Heart (released on Paper Bag Records), and eventually drummer Pat McGee on Set Yourself on Fire.

Naomi Klein

touring her new book : "Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism,"

Klein, author of the New York Times international bestseller "Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism," will speak on Friday October 17th, sponsored by the The Rio Theatre, Capitola Book Cafe, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom/Santa Cruz Branch, and the Resource Center for Nonviolence .

A dinner with the author at 5:30 p.m. will precede the 7:00 p.m. presentation and 8:30 p.m. book signing at the Rio Theatre.

"The Shock Doctrine" is a groundbreaking alternative history of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free-market economic revolution. Naomi Klein challenges the popular myth of this movement's peaceful global victory. From Chile in 1973 to Iraq today, Klein shows how Friedman and his followers have repeatedly harnessed terrible shocks and violence to implement their radical policies.

JENNY LEWIS

touring her new album Acid Tongue

Beachwood Sparks is support band and opener is Pierre de Reeder

It took Los Angeles band Rilo Kiley the better part of a decade to rise through the indie rock ranks, but with her 2006 solo debut, "Rabbit Fur Coat," the group's frontwoman, Jenny Lewis, quickly proved a force to be reckoned with.
Whether she's kicking ass in a sparkly jumpsuit onstage with Rilo Kiley or baring her soul with an acoustic guitar, Lewis has built a sizable base of fans and celebrity collaborators alike.
"It rocks a little harder," Lewis says of the new set. On "Rabbit Fur Coat," which was released on pal Conor Oberst's label, Team Love, and has sold 129,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, she paired with the Watson Twins for a folk- and-soul-influenced collection of songs that showcased her intimate side.
But with "Acid Tongue," her main objective going into the studio was to cut as many songs live as possible. In January, Lewis and co-producers Johnathan Rice, "Farmer" Dave Scher and Jason Leder retreated to Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, for three weeks of all-analog recording sessions. "The vibes were fantastic," she says.
The album features guest spots from a number of Lewis' friends, including Elvis Costello, who duets with her on "Carpetbaggers"; the Black Crowes' Chris Robinson; and her beau, Rice. Actress/singer Zooey Deschanel offers backing vocals on several tracks ("I love being flanked by hot brunettes," Lewis says), and Deschanel's She & Him collaborator M. Ward provides a moody guitar part on "Pretty Bird." Lewis' sister Leslie also supplies backing vocals, and her dad, Eddie Gordon, plays bass harp on the honky-tonk-ish "Jack Killed Mom."

PHOEBE SNOW

A fully formed musical talent when she emerged in the mid-1970s with her top 5 hit single "Poetry Man," winning her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and establishing her as a formidable singer/songwriter. Phoebe Snow has changed little since then, except that nowadays she rations out her arsenal of vocal pyrotechnics more discreetly and to more precise expressive effect than she used to. She still has power to spare, along with a sound that is at once instantly recognizable and technically inimitable. You can call her what you want: a rock belter with supersonic high notes, a rhythm-and-blues shouter insisting on sexual equality or a moody coffee-voiced folk-jazz diva. She is all of the above and everything in between. Kuumbwa Jazz is proud to present this one-of-a-kind vocal diva.

Citizen Cope a Solo Acoustic Performance

If you’ve heard any of the work that Cope has created over the past few years, you already know how quickly he can paint a masterpiece with the lightest of brushstrokes. How he captures a character in just a few words. Remember George from his self-titled album, the two-bit hustler from Baltimore in “200,000 (In Counterfeit $50 Bills)?” who “spends all his dough on the horses at the Pimlico.” The amputees in Sierra Leone’s sadly named capital of Freetown in “Bullet and a Target”? The lost soul worshiping his true love in the form of a forty-foot tall woman in a mural in “Pablo Picasso?” The woman who vanishes on the streets of D.C. in “Southern Avenue,” where ‘you don’t have to go overseas’ to find war, because war finds you. This is Cope’s gift: He takes snapshots of the world around him, and turns them into universal truths. He sets them to the simplest of melodies, and weds those in turn to the most soul-stirring grooves.

PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, Preservation Hall creative director Ben Jaffe salvaged a set of early PHJB master tapes from the flooded Sea Saint Studios. Those tracks, recorded by his father, Preservation Hall founder Allan Jaffe (1936-1987) inspired him to create The Hurricane Sessions - a musical and visual document that bridges the Hall’s past, present and future. The set, which takes the music and visual documents from last summer’s collector’s box Made In New Orleans, “demonstrates the significance of New Orleans music as a timeless cultural art form,” Jaffe says.

The collection spans decades of unique recordings from the Hall’s formidable archives, including a previously unreleased version of “Eh La Bas” sung by the iconic husband-and-wife team Billie and DeDe Pierce. Current PHJB members laid down new tracks to augment some of the rescued material – as on a new version of the 1976 track “Over in the Glory Land” - creating audible collages

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preservation Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Whether performing at Carnegie Hall or Lincoln Center, for British Royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director, Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra, Preservation Hall continues with a deep reverence and consciousness of its greatest attributes in the modern day as a venue, band, and record label.

Chimps at the Edge

A Frans Lanting Presentation

Renowned nature and wildlife photographer Frans Lanting takes us to a remote corner of West Africa to cover an unusual group of chimpanzees who are making people rethink the nature of chimps, and the boundaries between apes and early humans. This brand new presentation features stunning images and stirring field stories, along with thoughtful commentary on the challenges of global conservation. You’ll see exclusive images and footage of chimps, and never-before-filmed scenes of the chimps making spears to hunt small primates—a behavior that made headlines around the world when anthropologist Dr. Jill Pruetz first reported it last year.

On assignment for National Geographic, Frans and his wife, videographer Christine Eckstrom, woke before dawn each day to meet the Fongoli chimps of Senegal as they arose at first light. Traveling up to 15 miles each day in searing heat and carrying 40 lb backpacks, Frans and Christine captured groundbreaking images that contribute to the broader understanding of what chimps can do, and, perhaps, offering clues to our own evolution. “This was a grueling assignment. In fact, it was one of the hardest things physically that I’ve done in a long, long time” says Lanting.

An Evening Discussion on The Medical use of Cannabis

With:Dr Deborah Malka MD,Ph.D and Dr Jean Talleyrand MD.

“ Santa Cruz, California continues to be a forerunner in the legitimized use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. I, Dr. Deborah Malka, am the Assistant Medical Director of MediCann Inc., a company that has been providing medical cannabis physician specialty appointments in Santa Cruz county for the past four years. We now have 15 clinics throughout the state, and serve over 100,000 patients. We are so happy to have the opportunity to offer an evening discussing the latest knowledge in the use of cannabis as a medicinal herb, calling upon our research working with our broad patient base. We appreciate the Santa Cruz community which has supported our work, and so positively and tirelessly responded to the call for a resurgence of this ancient and effective medicine. I will be speaking about the clinical use of marijuana, and our Medical Director, Dr. Jean Talleyrand will be speaking about the medical cannabis patients that seek us out. We hope to demystify the question of who uses medical cannabis.”

--Dr. Deborah Malka MD, PhD

Show time: 8:00 pm
Admission is FREE but a donation of $5 would be appreciated.
There will be a question and answer period at the end of the presentation.

Mudhoney

Worldwide lovers of the finer things are rejoicing at the news that Mudhoney, yep Mudhoney, is back in vinyl and digital action in 2008 with The Lucky Ones, the band’s eighth full album in a mere 20 years of triumphant rocking.

The Lucky Ones redefines stripped-down, “back 2 basics” ramalama, certainly when it comes to Mudhoney’s recent past. I mean, it’s not like the band’s other twenty-first century works (2002’s Since We’ve Become Translucent and 2006’s Under a Billion Suns) were proggy, topographic explorations or anything—far from it. Yet this new one is deliberately and aggressively raw. It sounds as lean and as full-on as any modern equivalent one cares to mention. Recorded in a scant 3.5 days (including overdubs) with Tucker Martine (who also recorded four songs on the previous album), Mudhoney went in armed with a batch of new material expecting to spend a fair amount of time getting it right. Bang—and bang again after some mixing—and a new album was birthed in record time, faster than anything else the band’s done to date.

Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours

Antsy McClain & the Trailer Park Troubadours make their long awaited return to the Rio to celebrate the release of their new CD, New Good Old Days, with all their friends in Santa Cruz!

McClain has infused his current release titled, New Good Old Days with the rootsy, muscular blend of rock and roll that has become his trademark. These 14 tracks of positive, refreshing music feature guest appearances by legendary studio and touring players including Rob Ickes, Andy Leftwich, Jeff Taylor and Dave Pomeroy. Of course your favorite members of the Trailer Park Troubadours lend their talents to these new songs as well!

Antsy McClain’s live shows with the Troubadours are a unique mix of masterful musicianship, self-deprecating humor and intelligent lyrics. A glimpse of his song titles offers a tantalizing look into McClain’s wry blend of humor and emotional depth. He can make his audience laugh and even cry—sometimes in a single song. Humor and pathos in songwriting is a rare and magical combination.

With broad musical influences from Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Bill Monroe, Buck Owens, Jim Croce and Dr. Demento, McClain blends rock, soul and country into a single voice. McClain has worked on farms, factories, restaurants and classrooms. He's been an artist, a teacher, a tour guide, and a Japanese interpreter. He started taking his guitar with him on the road when he worked for the Japanese auto industry in the late 1980's. It was then that he first began writing about life as he knew it; in a small American trailer park.

Wildly independent and fiercely creative, Antsy McClain is staking his claim on pop culture. His plot may not be huge, but he’s mining it deep, uncovering little musical gems that reflect the joy and complexities of modern day life in America. It sounds like he hit pay dirt.
