His fiery, poignant, always soulful singing style has remained unique and ageless since he first emerged from the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early 1960's. For three decades, Havens has used his music to convey messages of brotherhood and personal freedom. With over twenty albums released and a rigorous touring schedule, he continues to view his calling as a high one. As he told The Denver Post, "I really sing songs that move me. I'm not in show business; I'm in the communications business. That's what it's about for me."

JZ KNIGHT, RAMTHA CHANNELER
from " what the bleep do we know "
Who Is Ramtha?
Ramtha is an ancient warrior, conqueror, and ascended Master who lived 35,000 years ago. Remnants of his life and teachings exist in various archaeological artifacts from India and Egypt, as well as ancient Hindu literature. The fact that he is no longer limited by his physical body allows him to interact with the physical world in other forms. He chose this time to return because the human race is ready to understand what he discovered about our true identity as the Observer, responsible for collapsing the quantum field and molding time and space.
JZ Knight, the Channel
JZ Knight was born March 16, 1946 in Roswell, New Mexico to a family of migrant farmworkers. She was the eighth child in the family and spent her early childhood in the cotton fields while her mother worked picking cotton.
JZ Knight became a very successful businesswoman. Her professional work was interrupted by Ramtha, who started her on a journey of self-discovery and mastership. JZ was part of Ramtha's life historically as one of his beloved adopted children, Ramaya. One of the more controversial aspects of Ramtha's teachings is the form in which he chose to deliver his message. The form in which he communicates his teachings is through the phenomenon called channeling. In fact, it was Ramtha who made the term known in the late 1970s. Ramtha chose JZ Knight and prepared her to channel him, using her body to teach his message in person. A channel is different from a medium in that the channel is not the intermediary between the consciousness coming through her and the audience. The channel does not remain in a transfixed altered state while channeling; rather she leaves her body completely and allows the consciousness coming through to have full faculty over all her bodily movements and functions. Ramtha, while being channeled through JZ Knight, has the ability to open his eyes, walk, dance, eat and drink, laugh, speak, converse, and teach his students personally. JZ Knight is the only channel he has chosen and uses to deliver his message.

An evening with HAPA
"If Maui were music, it would sound like these guys."
--Wallace Baine, Santa Cruz Sentinel
Spend Valentine's Day with "Hawaii's hottest group!" (Billboard), HAPA. With the release of their 6th album, Maui, Hapa's Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau embrace the wider cultures of the pan-Polynesian South Pacific in this wide-ranging performance. Charles Ka'upu’s stirring chants and stories mesh with dramatic hula by Hapa’s Malia Kawailanamalie Petersen and dancer’s from the Hula School of Santa Cruz.
With a pulse and energy that make it entirely of today, Hapa's groundbreaking music connects firmly to the Polynesian past, featuring poetic ballads about the sea, the lushness of the land, and favorite chiefs all told through melodies rich in harmony and backed by virtuoso guitar. Add their signature dose of American acoustic folk/rock, Celtic and world influences and you have the essence of what Hawaii and Hapa music is: "beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful" (Los Angeles Times).
“Hapa’s Maui is an instant classic and solidifies the group’s standing as a titan of the genre. They haven’t missed a beat.”  -- KCSN-FM, Los Angeles
Show time: 7:30 pm
Tickets: $22 General, $30 reserved available at www.ticketweb.com and Streetlight Records, 939 Pacific Ave in downtown Santa Cruz.

Peru Negro
"A carnival celebration of culture...colorful costumes, sensual dances and historic verses."
- The Los Angeles Times
When slave masters in colonial Peru banned drums, the slaves found new ways to create their outlawed rhythms. They used almost anything that made noise when struck by a bamboo stick or slapped with the palm of a hand. With the addition of melodic guitar and passionate singing and dancing, Peru Negro keeps the tradition of Afro-Peruvian music alive. Appointed as "Ambassadors of Peruvian Culture" by their government, this Lima-based ensemble has helped bring major international attention to Peru's African legacy.

TURNING ECSTATIC!
THE SANTA CRUZ FILM FESTIVAL AND THE THRESHOLD SOCIETY AND VISIONARY MEDIA INC. PRESENT AN EVENING FILLED WITH RUMI MUSIC, FILM, POETRY AND DANCE
The event will include Canadian writer/director Tina Petrova and and Stephen Roloff’s life-changing film Turning Ecstatic, the music of Baraka, a world-class Sufi music ensemble, and readings of Rumi’s poetry by the esteemed Kabir and Camille Helminski. The night will be spun away by a special presentation of the Whirling Dervishes of the Threshold Society.
Petrova’s film, Turning Ecstatic, was inspired six years ago when Tina drove off a cliff - both literally and figuratively. On her way to spend the morning chanting at a Buddhist monastery high in the mountains of Southern California’s desert, Petrova gave a ride to a hitchhiker, an enigmatic woman standing beside a deserted stretch of road. When Tina dropped the hitchhiker off at her destination, she had offered a prophetic warning. Driving up the mountain, the words echoed in Tina’s mind as her car hit a patch of black ice and started to skid: “don’t drive off the cliff today…”  This life-changing event launched Tina on the journey that was to become the basis for her docudrama Turning Ecstatic. In the midst of an ongoing struggle with pain and despair, she was visited by a phenomenal encounter with Rumi, a 13th century Sufi mystic. The incident opened up a path of healing and transformation that lead Tina to a remarkable array of individuals whose lives and work have been influenced by Rumi’s philosophy, teachings and poetry.  Rumi’s exquisite metaphors of ecstatic divine love resonate all the more powerfully in today’s troubled times, and all the more ironically- for his birthplace was Afghanistan and his final resting place Turkey. Join us on one woman’s magical journey of passion, bliss and surrender that offers a perspective of renewed hope for all humankind.

"Desert blues, the wandering, smoky lines of the music summon up a nomadic sense of a land without boundaries." - The Guardian (UK)
If ever there were a band of true rebel rockers, these veiled and robed exiled nomads from the southern Sahara are it. Their sound is powerful and original, tied to Touareg music from their home in northern Mali. But traditional instruments such as the derbouka, calebass, and flute have been augmented with electric guitars and the influences of American blues, rock and rap, Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix, and other Western and Middle Eastern influences. "They rock." - Time Out (UK)

REVEREND BILLY
and The Church of Stop Shopping

Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir return to Santa Cruz for a blistering revival show : singing, dancing and fiery preaching will get you in the spirit!
Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir believe that Consumerism is overwhelming our lives. The corporations want us to have experiences only through their products. Our neighborhoods, "commons" places like stoops and parks and streets and libraries, are disappearing into the corporatized world of big boxes and chain stores. But if we "back away from the product" - even a little bit, well then we Put The Odd Back In God! The supermodels fly away and we're left with our original sensuality. So we are singing and preaching for local economies and real - not mediated through products -- experience. We like independent shops where you know the person behind the counter or at least - you like them enough to share a story. We ask that local activists who are defending themselves against supermalls, nuke plants, gentrification -- call us and we'll come and put on our "Fabulous Worship!" Remember children... Love is a Gift Economy! -- The Rev

Hosted by: The Rio Theatre, Pleasure Point Night Fighters, and the Aloha Riders
For as long as there have been surfers, there has been an accepted standard of what was normal--finless redwood planks in the '20's, longboards in the '60's, single-fins in the '70's, thrusters in the '80's and '90's. But today, there is no standard; there is no norm. There is only a group of surfers that are going their own way.
FIN is an examination of the current state of the art, a time in surfing culture when surfers are compelled to ride whatever they want in order to facilitate a style that suits them best. FIN is a study of the end of one mentality, a look at the current epoch of surfing history, and a celebration of a time in surf culture when what you ride means nothing, but how you ride it means everything.
Starring: Alex Knost, Andrew Logreco, Andy Irons, Chris Bredesen, Colin McPhillips, Dan Thompson, Dane Petersen, Dodger Kremel, Flea, Herbie Fletcher, Jalian, Joel Parkinson, Joel Tudor, Kekoa Uemura, Kelly Slater, Lucas Proudfoot, Mick Fanning, Pickle, Ratboy, Steven Thomas, Tanner Beckett, Titus Kinimaka, Tom Wegener, Wingnut, Wayne Dean.

BILLABONG JACK McCOY SURF FILM FESTIVAL
The festival line-up also includes The Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards 2006, with some monster footage from famous US breaks Ghost Tree, Monterey and Mavericks, San Francisco. The festival opens each night with the winning entry from the Panasonic Surfshorts Competition 2006.
Free as a Dog — McCoy’s 24th film in a long line of classics, including Tubular Swells, Storm Riders, Blue Horizon and many more — showcases the remarkable surfing talent of Joel ‘Parko’ Parkinson (Australia) like never before.
Narrated by Parko’s faithful hound Trey, the film follows the duo on a mission to help get a couple of lovesick grommets (played by Australian, surfers James "Woody" Wood and Ellis Ericson) back on track after they've fallen for a beautiful dark-haired beach beauty (Ashley Cheadle, Australia).
For the past year, Jack, Parko, Woody and Ellis have been chasing waves all over the Australian coastline and beyond, capturing some never-before-filmed breaks. The film also has a look at Joel’s home turf — Coolangatta, Queensland, also home to what is affectionately known as “The Superbank”, a man-made stretch of perfect beach that creates perfect, long, peeling waves.
The 2006 Panasonic Surfshorts winner was ‘131.9 Cents’ by Tony Mason (Melbourne, Australia). Panasonic Surfshorts is a short-film competition that aims to encourage and support filmmakers of all levels. ‘131.9 cents’ is based on true events of Tony Mason. A guy born and raised in the city, over an hour from the coast, Tony manages to discover the beauty of surfing  regardless of the cost to keep riding waves.
The final item on the festival program will be some astonishing footage from The 2006 XXL Big Wave Awards. The film will showcase the biggest waves ridden during the 2005/06 season.
Six years after its debut, the Billabong Jack McCoy Surf Film Festival has grown to become the WORLD’S LARGEST of its kind, screening to over 40,000 people in 13 countries.
Show time: 7:00 pm
Tickets ($10) on sale through  from April 10th, at selected surf shops or at the venue on the night. For more information please visit www.Billabong.com or www.JackMcCoy.com

Let Abbey Road Be
by the White Album Ensemble

In 2003, the White Album Ensemble began a tradition at the Rio center for the performing... by presenting the Beatles' "White Album" live in concert, performed by an 8 piece band comprised of some of the area's top musicians who'd rehearsed and researched for months to ensure a tight show with musical authenticity. They continued the following spring '04 by debuting "Rubber Revolver", (Rubber Soul, Revolver and the singles that were released at the same time), then the next spring '05, the worlds' most popular album and its companion piece - Sgt. Peppers' Mystery Tour.
In completing this cycle for '06, the group offers the Beatles' final two records, Abbey Road and Let It Be with the singles released during that period, such as "Lady Madonna".
While being wildly different records in sound quality, recording techniques and attitude, they make a fitting final installment of the White Album Ensemble's two- album concert series.
The Ensemble has made it their mission to recreate the landmark albums (that were released after the Beatles stopped touring, or contained material that had instrumentation that they  could not use in concert at that time), in their original song sequence, and with exact instrumentation whenever possible.
While "Let It Be" has been called the sound of the most popular entertainment group in history breaking up and growing apart with all the chaos, drugs, personal differences and business pressures taking their toll, "Abbey Road" is a fitting, tasteful "let's bury the hatchet- and go out in style with a great record" sentiment.
Let It Be was recorded rather crudely- without overdubs, much of it loose and out of tune, but still the Beatles! The songs are as great as ever, from "The Long and Winding Road" to "Get Back".
George Martin, the brilliant arranger/ producer/ sonic architect who had produced all of their previous records, had bowed out of "Let It Be". It was recorded by Glyn Johns and shelved as substandard, then re-mixed by famed "Wall Of Sound" U.S. Producer Phil Spector (Ronettes, Righteous Bros., Tina Turner's "River Deep Mountain High") .
But on "Abbey Road", the winning formula of beautifully crafted songs, multi tracked vocals, meticulous arrangements, musical guests like Billy Preston and Eric Clapton and George Martin's tasteful production were all back in full force. Many people feel it is the crowning of the Beatles' artistry.
Replicating the Fab Four's many overdubbed parts on these albums requires 8 top Santa Cruz and Monterey, Ca. based musicians and vocalists -
Jason Schimmel (Guitar, Keyboard and Vocals)
Tiran Porter (Bass, Vocals),
Dale Ockerman (Keyboards, Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals),
Ken Kraft (Guitar and Vocals,),
Alan Heit, (Vocals, and Guitar),
Michael Daugherty (Drums, vocals),
Bob Bliss (Keyboards, Guitar and Vocals),
Richard Bryant (Vocals, and Percussion).
As is the tradition, Mark Thornton will create an era video accompaniment for the Rio's movie screen, as a backdrop to the group.

Coleman Barks with
Barry & Shelley Phillips

Barry and Shelley are celebrating the release of their new CD: I Have Five Things To Say
Coleman Barks joins local musical wonders Barry and Shelley Phillips for a harmonic meeting of east and west – poetry of the sufi mystic Jelaluddin Rumi performed to music rooted in the Shaker and Shape Note traditions of America. Rumi's masterpieces have inspired countless people throughout the centuries, and Coleman Barks’ exquisite renderings of the thirteenth-century Persian mystic are widely considered the definitive versions for our time. These fresh, original translations magnificently convey Rumi's insights into the human heart and its longings with his signature passion and daring, focusing on the ecstatic experience of the inseparability of human and divine love.
Rumi was born in Afghanistan in 1207, a time of tremendous political turmoil in the Near East, and his brilliant mystical awareness reached into all aspects of life. For Rumi, soul and body and emotion are not separate but are rather part of the great mystery of mortal life, a riddle whose solution is love. Above all else, Rumi's poetry exposes us to the delight that comes from being fully alive, urging us always to put aside our fears and take the risk of discovering our core self.
Show time: 8:00 pm
Tickets: $15 advance/ $20 door General Admission (831) 426-9155 for more information
Advance tickets available at Westside Stories 457-2021 or Gateways Books 429-9600
Special guests this evening will include the Santa Cruz Shape Note Society, singing early American folk hymns from Coleman’s home state of Georgia, joined by Coleman himself, an enthusiastic bass singer. Coleman Barks is a renowned poet whose appearances on Bill Moyers' two PBS poetry series brought him wide acclaim. He now focuses on writing and on performing Rumi poetry in readings and concerts.
Barry Phillips (cello and tabla) received his M.M. in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has been active in film composition, orchestration and conducting and is a woodworking fanatic as time allows. Barry has also worked in India as a composer and cellist and currently is working with Ravi Shankar.
Shelley Phillips (Irish harp and wind instruments) received her M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In addition to performing and recording in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas, she is director of the Santa Cruz Community Music School and director of the Santa Cruz Shape Note Society.

" GARDEN RUIN " .

"Garden Ruin " is where Calexico fill those dusty, empty landscapes they've long documented with a big, bang sound. and THE BLACK HEART PROCESSION
Touring their new album " SPELL"
Theirs is the sound of driving at night across the West. Like the wide-open landscape, this is music that knows how to be both desolate and lush. And it knows that while sadness pulls you down, discontent pushes you forward. So the Procession never stops. Here, a song's 6/8 beat will pull you into a moody seductive waltz and next, the violin and piano evoke the house band of a lonesome cabaret with the lights turned low. Then the strings stop their mournful crying and shift into a propulsive thrum, and now we've got the pedal to the metal and we're heading straight down the open road into a cinematic twilight.

NEKO CASE
Touring her new album "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood"
Sonny Smith opens

There is the basic, by now familiar biographical arc: Case’s childhood in Washington State, art school in Vancouver, her early baptism into the world of country and gospel music, and contemporary gigs in distaff punk trios Maow and Cub, as well as a longer (and ongoing) stint in powerhouse Canadian pop group the New Pornographers. Since the late ‘90s, however, the bulk of Case’s energies have been devoted to a thriving solo career. Following three critically lauded studio albums, 1997’s The Virginian, 2000’s Furnace Room Lullaby, and 2002’s masterful Blacklisted; a quietly potent kitchen- recorded EP, Canadian Amp; and last year’s brilliantly conceived concert collection The Tigers Have Spoken, Case reemerges with her latest, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood.

The Anna Cabrini Chronicles -
Feature Film"

Q&A Duel with Director Tawd b. Dorenfeld & Composer Trey Spruance
(Secret Chiefs 3, Mr. Bungle)
On a scale of grandiose proportions director Tawd b. Dorenfeld brilliantly
weaves together live-action footage with original animation and effects.  The film’s unique composition, texture and sound are enhanced by an original score & foley composed by the internationally acclaimed Jazz/Noise musician and multi- instrumentalist, Trey Spruance (Secret Chiefs 3, Mr. Bungle, John Zorn).
The Anna Cabrini Chronicles voices the inner chaos of four characters, three of whom brutally kill themselves.  The film cuts unforgivingly into a psychological void with severe and unrelenting portrayals of each suicide.  Brooke Caldner (played by Samantha Deane) battles with theological dichotomies and body image.  Unable to accept his homosexuality, Jonathan, (as played by Michael Childers), succumbs to a fragmentation of his sexual desires and ultimately of his person.  Twelve year old Venice Beach skater Merrick (as played by Bryan Trujillo), decides the only escape from his hopeless family life is to end his own.  The film’s narrator, Anna Cabrini (played by Leigh Hope Phillips) lives on, but never ceases to grapple with her childhood trauma and the loss of her subjects whose lives she recorded on microcassette.
Show time: 7:00 pm
Tickets: $10 at the door

KUSP Presents Amy Goodman
host of Democracy Now!

Along with her brother, journalist, David Goodman, Amy Goodman will be giving a talk titled Breaking the Sound BarrierSunday. The brother-sister team of Amy Goodman, host of the popular international TV and radio news show Democracy Now! and investigative journalist David Goodman have collaborated on a new book, Static: Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders and the People Who Fight Back. The appearance is a benefit for KUSP, Central Coast Public Radio.
The Goodmans are authors of the New York Times best-seller The Exception to the Rulers; their new book once again takes on government liars, corporate profiteers, and the media that has acted as their megaphone. They examine how the Bush administration manipulated and fabricated news and how the corporate media has worked to deceive the public. The Goodmans cut through the spin and static to offer the truth about war, torture, and government control of the media. Mixing investigative reporting and interviews, Static presents voices of dissidents, activists, and others who are often excluded from official debate, to shed new light on urgent issues of war and peace.
Show time: 7:00 pm
Advance tickets are $22 and are available online at kusp.org and at Bookshop Santa Cruz, Capitola Book Café, Gateways Books and Monterey Bay Books. For more information, call 831-476-2800.

THE OTHER FINAL
(The Netherlands, 2003, 80 min., color)
Directed by Johan Kramer
Two cultures that couldn’t be more different meet in this documentary that pits the lowest ranking soccer teams in the 2002 World Cup against each other. The Asian mountain kingdom of Bhutan is ranked 202, and the tiny Caribbean island nation of Monserrat, recovering at that time from a devastating volcanic eruption, is ranked 203. The film leads up to and ends with the officially FIFA-sanctioned game, held in Bhutan. But it is really about the people from each country and their humanity and dignity. Goofy and inspiring at the same time, this extraordinary documentary is uplifting and educational as few films are.

3:00pm
A STATE OF MIND

(Korea, 2005, 93 min., color)
Directed by Daniel Gordon
This thought-provoking documentary follows two young North Korean girls over a period of eight months as they prepare for the national Mass Games, the largest and most elaborate choreographed gymnastics performance in the world, featuring 100,000 participants. Directed by a BBC documentary producer, the film provides a rare glimpse into one of the least-known societies in the world. As the filmmakers were told by their local guide, "No one has ever been allowed to see, let alone film, what you are witnessing." Sealed off from outside influences, North Korea follows its own communist ideals and a strict philosophy centering on the worship of the Kim dynasty: Kim II Sung (who died in 1994 but remains Head of State) and his son and successor, Kim Jong II or "the General."

5:00pm
UNSALTED
(USA, 2005, 60 min., color
Directed by Vince P. Deur -- Director present for screening.
Meet the surfers of the Great Lakes. Summer and winter they ride the wind-swell waves on the midwest’s huge "freshwater seas," that sprawl to the shores of Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario. The surf can be immense, even by Hawaiian and Santa Cruz standards, with wave faces towering up to 15 feet in storm conditions that may include snow, hail, sleet and floating chunks of ice the size of surfboards. With amazing footage that includes Santa Cruz's own world-class surfer Omar Etcheverry, Unsalted offers surfers and non-surfers alike a rare opportunity to meet some of the most intrepid surfers on the planet.

7:00pm
BIG DRUM - TAIKO IN THE UNITED STATES
(USA, 2005, 60 min., color)
Directed by Akira Boch -- Director present for screening
With its thunderous rhythms and high energy, this documentary tells the story of Japanese group drumming called Taiko.  The film features a number of America's Taiko pioneers, and through interviews and rare film and video footage, it documents the ongoing evolution and transformation of this dynamic performing art. Among the many drumming groups included are Kenny Endo Taiko Ensemble, Denver Taiko, Maui Taiko and Zenshuji Zendeko. Lovers of all drumming styles will relish this film.   A performance by Watsonville Taiko preceeds the film.

LI'A: The Legacy of a Hawaiian Man is the first film by filmmakers Eddie and Myrna Kamae. It premiered in November 1988 at the Hawaii International Film Festival, and was the Closing Night Film at the 1989 Pacific Rim Film Festival. This one-hour documentary is about the music of Hawaii. It is also the story of a place, the Big Island's legendary Waipi'o Valley, and a man whose music was nurtured by that place. Born in 1881, Sam Li'a Kalainaina was a man of an older time whose 94 years bridged two centuries and two ways of life.
Li'a's music inspired Eddie Kamae to preserve this man's unique legacy on film. Eighteen years in the making, this was the first film directed by Kamae, a widely respected performer, singer and a musical legend in his own right.
Combing interviews, spectacular scenery, and original songs performed by Eddie's band, The Sons of Hawaii, Li'a is a touching tribute to a gentle-spirited and unforgettable man. As was noted in CINEVUE Magazine (New York, 1990), " . . . the film imparts a deep sense of the traditional Hawaiian balance between the people, their music, and the land. It has the important (and rare) touch of a filmmaker who has taken the time to truly understand his subject."

Ramblin' Jack Elliott
the legendary folk singer who passed Woody Guthrie's legacy on to Bob Dylan, turned 75 in August 2006. And after decades of watching more driven performers enjoy the success he's never experienced, now he's ready to get serious about his career with his new release ,
" I Stand Alone "
An intimate gem of a recording - like a poem - a classic Ramblin’ Jack run-on sentence I Stand Alone could not be more appropriately titled. The freewheeling, well-traveled singer is one of the final archetypal representatives of America's underground folk tradition, a self-made wayfarer whose fifty-plus years of experience resonates through every tune captured here. The consummate song collector, Elliott has assembled a full deck of titles characterized by a wild mixture of graphic imagery, old time sentiment and Americana tradition. An intimate experience recorded by one of America's original folk icons.

'Conversations with God'

Putumayo's Acoustic Africa featuring: Habib Koité, Vusi Mahlasela and Dobet

Vusi Mahlasela, from South Africa, commands an "instantly affecting" (Billboard) voice that has promoted hope and love while attacking hate and segregation in his apartheid-ravaged homeland and was featured on the soundtrack to the Academy Award-winning foreign film Tsotsi.
They are joined by newcomer Dobet Gnahoré, from the Ivory Coast, whose music reflects a variety of influences, including Mandingo music, Congolese rumba, ziglibiti from the Ivory Coast, and Cameroonian bikutsi. The Acoustic Africa tour marks her long-awaited U.S. debut.

Diamanda Galas
“Galás plays the piano like driving rain slapping on concrete, and she sings like a demon going to war, a Valkyrie scatting, a lizard queen seeking revenge for  the dead… Galás is profound, rigorous, vocally unlimited, terrifying and utterly compelling.”
–The Age, Australia
"Specializing in music that can be as jarring as it is uncompromising, the dark avant-garde chanteuse, who can smoothly croon and hellishly exhort in equal measure, eschews the notion that music should simply entertain, Galas rarely fails to make an indelible impression, whether exhuming old blues standards or wailing for the unjustly deceased."

love
written & directed by Vladan Nikolic
2005, 93 min.

In this stylish, atmospheric thriller, a hit man who learned his deadly craft in the Balkan wars, his beautiful former lover, and her police officer boyfriend all cross paths in lower Manhattan. The looping, nonlinear narrative structure and crisscrossing fates of its colorful characters may remind many of Pulp Fiction, but instead of recycling the hipster argot and rap rhythm of that influential L.A. story of more than a decade ago, love gives us a wintry, present-day New York City that is very much a cosmopolitan metropolis, a city of immigrant hustlers and their Old World accents-the Yugoslavian hit man, the German doctor, the French coquette, and the Neapolitan crook, and many others. love is all the more stimulating because of the elegant simplicity with which it was made; aside from its thriller plot, the spare visual composition and beautifully lit scenes are alone more than reason enough to see this picture. From its memorable scenes, which include a killing in a park to the Mexican stand-off inside a church to the dimly lighted nightclub, where an emcee in drag promises the jaded patrons 'music you've never heard before,' this stylish crime tale makes the New York scene glow with color-drenched beauty, menace, and mystery.

DOUBLE FEATURE

5:00PM
Iraq for Sale
The War Profiteers is the story of what happens to everyday Americans when corporations go to war.  Acclaimed director Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, Outfoxed, and Uncovered) takes you inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows and children who have been changed forever as a result of corporate greed in the reconstruction of Iraq. Iraq for Sale uncovers the connections between private security companies making a killing in Iraq and the decision makers who allow them to do so.

American Blackout
Many have heard of the alleged voting irregularities that occurred during the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Until now, these incidents have gone under-reported and are commonly written-off as insignificant rumors or unintentional mishaps resulting from an overburdened election system.
American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disenfranchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. McKinney not only took an active role investigating these election debacles, but has found herself in the middle of her own after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Featuring: Congressional members: John Conyers, John Lewis, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, Bernie Sanders and jounalists Greg Palast and Bob Fitrakis.

VENEZUELA RISING
As seen through the eyes of grandmother and community organizer Gladys Bolivar, the documentary follows her and her compatriots five days before it is to be decided by popular referendum whether Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will continue in office or step down. The entire nation has been mobilized. Will it be SI, yes he will be recalled, or NO, he will remain in office. Most Venezuelans feel that no less than the entire future of their country is at stake in this election.
Issues of democracy and politics are addressed -- what constitutes a free and fair election? What stimulates citizen participation? Are elections the ultimate measure of a thriving democracy? How do our elections in the U.S. measure up to the vibrancy of the elections in Venezuela?
Venezuela Rising gets behind the headlines and into the neighborhoods of Caracas to find out how participatory democracy works on the ground.
With guest speakers Conn Hallinan, columnist for Foreign Policy in Focus and Dawn Gable, U.S. Bolivarian Circles.
Show time: 7:00 pm

“Their hard-core gospel sound was rousing and couldn't help but inspire.” –The Washington Pos
The Blind Boys of Alabama have spread the spirit and energy of pure soul gospel music for over 60 years, ever since the first version of the group formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. Today, founding members Clarence Fountain and Jimmy Carter are joined by more recent arrivals but their mission remains the same – to bring out the most spiritual aspects of mainstream music, while at the same time bringing the music of the church straight to the roadhouse. Their holiday show and album, Go Tell It on the Mountain, promises to be an uplifting experience – just in time for the holidays. Www.blindboys.com
