PURE SWEET HELL CYCLOCROSS
FILM
Pure Sweet Hell, is a film about the passionate and unique community
of cyclocross. Shot over the last two years around northern California
as well as following the national circuit. we asked the question..what
is cyclocross? what drives men, women, and children to go out
in the cold, jump off their bike, sling a muddy bike over their
shoulder and run up a hill wearing lycra? we dug up photos from
the 60's/70's and we interviewed the people who were there in
the beginning.
Beautifully shot on 8mm-this piece captures the nature of the
beast.
FEATURING: Justin Robinson/Gina Hall/Barry Wicks/Rick Hunter/Bob
Leibold/Thomas Freshknecht/Mike Ferrentino/Jeff Clark
MUSIC:Andy Kortman
Show time: 7:00pm
Doors at 6:30pm
Tickets $5 at the door night of show
FUNDRAISER: The Jan. 16th screening of the Film "Pure Sweet
Hell" will be a Fundraiser for the local Velo Bella duo of
Sarah Kerlin and Barbara Howe. Sarah and Barbara were selected
by our governing body -USA Cycling-to represent our country as
two of the top female cyclocross racers at the World Cyclocross
Championships in St. Wendel, Germany. The governing body however
does not recognize cyclocross to the effect that no funds are
allocated towards the athletes as "cross" is not an
Olympic event.
Therefore we would like to congratulate the two women and all
the people involved to the effect that proceeds from the showing
of "Pure Sweet Hell" will help towards sending Sarah
and Barbara to St. Wendel, Germany representing NOR CAL CROSS.

Life is To Whistle A Film
by Fernando Perez
This is also a fundraiser for Caribbean Hurricane relief. Presented
By The Cuba Study Group of Santa Cruz
A love letter - not without criticism - from the director to his
country.
DIRECTOR1S NOTE
Life Is To Whistle is a film about
the theme of happiness in an absurd code. It is also a film about
my city, La Habana, at the end of this century, in which the absurd
and the marvelous form part of daily life. -Fernando Perez-
FILMED in Cuba, "Life Is To Whistle" is about the quest
for happiness in Havana in the year 2000. Narrated by 18-year-old
Bebe we follow the lives of three denizens of La Habana: Marianna,
the promiscuous dancer who makes a pact with God, swearing to
a life of celibacy in exchange for the lead in a ballet; mixed
race Elpidio, abandoned at birth by his mother and living with
the need to find her; and finally Julia, an honest woman who does
good to others, but who suffers from an illness that causes her
to faint when she hears the word "sex".

Frans
Lanting: Extreme Hawaii
Most people associate Hawaii with beaches and balmy weather, but
there is another, more extreme Hawaii which Frans Lanting has
documented in the course of several expeditions. On assignment
for National Geographic he covered the dramatic volcanic activity
on the Big Island, which resulted in spectacular photos featured
as the cover story in National Geographic's October 2004 issue.
On other journeys he explored seldom-visited valleys and summits
of Maui and Kauai where rare native birds and plants struggle
to survive in misty cloud forests, which are among the wettest
spots on earth. To the northwest of Hawaii's large islands stretches
a remote chain of miniscule islets and atolls, known as the Hawaiian
Leeward Islands.
Once lush and mountainous, they are now coral reefs inhabited
by tens of millions of seabirds. Frans spent months in the Leewards
to document the life histories of albatrosses. From the red hot
craters of the Big Island to the hanging valleys of Kauai and
Maui and out to the blue horizons of the Leewards, Frans will
weave together a story of primeval Hawaii.

Films listed not in order shown and may
be subject to change:
Ouray Ice - The
highlight of Colorado's annual Ouray Ice Festival is the challenging
mixed (rock and ice) climbing competition. In 2004, of the 26
international competitors, only two make it to the top. This short
film captures the breathtaking performances of these two amazing
athletes.
Yukon Quest - A
journey following the toughest race in the world - the 1600 km
Yukon Quest dog sled race from Fairbanks, Alaska to Whitehorse,
Yukon. In the coldest depths of the sub-arctic winter, over several
mountain ranges, along rivers overflowing their frigid waters,
through wilderness where hundreds of kilometers separate remote
enclaves of humanity, dogs and humans form teams which combine
determination, stamina and love to fulfill their Yukon Quest.
Alone Across Australia -
AWARD WINNER - People's Choice & Best Film on Mountain Environment
In 2001, climber and adventurer Jon Muir began a 2500-kilometre
odyssey to cross Australia from the south coast to the north coast
on foot. For 128 days, Jon and his dog, Seraphine, survived entirely
off the land, hunting and gathering along the way. Jon was taxed
to the limit physically and emotionally. Often close to despair,
he drew on his instinct for survival, his deep understanding of
the land and his remarkable inner strength.
Soul Purpose - AWARD
WINNER - Special Jury Mention - Shot entirely on 16mm film, Soul
Purpose takes the viewer deep into the minds and abilities of
the athletes. With trips to the far-off reaches of the planet
including Italy, Alaska and Canada, this film captures the best
of big mountain skiing and snowboarding.
At the Ends of the Earth -
The story of a delicately balanced house. Perched on top of a
mountain, the house rocks from right to left, much to the displeasure
of its occupants.
Trans Andes - Will
Gadd checked out a map of the world and decided that the Andes
would be a good place to fly. He called up some friends and it
was off to South America; paragliders, poor planning and lots
of wind add up to a big adventure.
Heavy Fork - This
video diary documents an enthusiastic 12-year-old's bruising attempts
to create his own distinctive, unorthodox mountain-biking style.
One World - The
latest paddling film from the team that made "Nurpu"
and "Wehyakin", "One World" steps up the adventure
as well as the production quality (filmed in HD). The film presents
kayak action, athletes, and lifestyles on rivers around the globe.
Edited specifically for the World Tour, this special version of
"One World" features huge whitewater in China and Uganda.
Ciao Martina - Italian
climber Simone Moro reflects on his life and mountain career during
a winter attempt on the South face of Shishapangma. He has left
his five-year-old daughter, Martina, at home and he misses her
a lot.
Saturday, Feb. 26 @ 7 pm
Films listed not in order shown and may
be subject to change:
The Collective -
The Collective is a group of filmmakers, photographers and mountain
bikers. By drawing on the experience, expertise and creative energy
of every member of the team, the Collective has created a film
that portrays the newest cutting-edge images of the freeride mountain-biking
progression.
Thumbnail - In one
of the many fjords on the south coast of Greenland, there is what
Europeans have baptized "the Thumbnail" -- a granite
wall a mile high, the tallest cliff in the world. Cecilia and
Roberta, two of today's best mountain climbers, prepare to ascend.
They approach the wall by kayak, paddling for several days through
icebergs, passing whales and seals. Arriving at the foot of the
cliff, they get ready to climb. They think it will take one week
on the wall: climbing, sleeping, working together. If they make
it, this route will be the longest new route climbed by women.
Chasing the White Demon - This tale of whitewater exploration follows a group of kayakers
and rafters seeking first descents in Colombia, Chile and Argentina.
The film features outrageous carnage, a search for whitewater
in Colombia, and the new world-record freefall descent for a raft.
Balance of Risk -
Climber Jamie Andrew returns to the rock after a horrific accident
on the north face of the Droites in the French Alps which killed
his climbing partner.
The Man Who Jumped Beneath the Earth - Five years after becoming the oldest person to BASE jump off
Venezuela's Angel Falls, 66-year-old Eric Jones sets off for Mexico,
to BASE jump the Cave of the Swallows. What makes a father of
two teenage daughters risk everything to tackle the world's toughest
BASE jump in the 1400-foot-deep cave, and will this novice jumper
achieve his dream?
Weekend Warrior -
This humorous film depicts the hapless pursuits of a male snowboarder
who tries his hardest to cruise the mountain for female companionship.
Sunday, Feb. 25 @ 2 pm
Films listed not in order shown and may
be subject to change:
Tom Crean - Antartica's
Forgotten Hero - Tom Crean became one of the most indestructible
heroes of Antarctic exploration, taking part in three of the four
greatest Antarctic expeditions. Using archival photographs and
film, and interviews with polar historians and relatives of Tom
Crean and Ernest Shackleton, this film recounts Crean's astonishing
life of adventure, heroism and survival against the odds.
Realization - Leading
climber Chris Sharma turns his attention in this film to a cliff
in Céüse, southern France. The combination of a 5.14c
route topped by a bouldering move stymies him time and again.
However, if he can send it, the route may rank as the hardest
in the world.
A Russian Wave -
Two professional kayakers, athlete Becky Bristow and Dunbar Hardy,
hired by the Russian government to assess whitewater rivers and
tourism potential in northeastern Russia, arrive expecting an
incredible adventure. They soon realize that the Russian idea
of whitewater is very different from theirs. "A Russian Wave"
is a humorous look at dashed expectations, adventure and cultural
differences.
Sinners - AWARD
WINNER - Best Film on Mountain Sport
Coupling the wisdom of 100-year-old physicist A.J. Snow with three
years of filmmaking in deep, deep British Columbia snow, Nelson
filmmaker Bill Heath created a simple work that speaks to his
own love of powder. The music, the joy and the beautifully patient
photography make us aware of the exquisiteness of the gasping-for-air
moments that only come from the deep and the light.
At the Ends of the Earth - The story of a delicately balanced house. Perched on top of
a mountain, the house rocks from right to left, much to the displeasure
of its occupants.
Hike Hike Hike -
AWARD WINNER - Best Short Mountain Film
Clean and crisp as the Arctic it depicts, this animated film is
simultaneously lush and lean, relying only on the sound of the
dogs and of the runners on the sled that the dogs pull across
the snow.
Psicobloc - On the
island of Mallorca, Klem Loskot and his friends establish spectacular
routes on overhanging limestone up to 60 feet or 20 meters high.
With no ropes and with the ocean as a crash pad, the climbing
is unemcumbered and the falls magnificent.
Heavy Fork - This
video diary documents an enthusiastic 12-year-old's bruising attempts
to create his own distinctive, unorthodox mountain-biking style.

HAPA
Help celebrate the release of Hapa's new CD, "Maui"
in this concert also featuring Hawaiian chanter Charles Ka'upu
and hula by Oahu's Ms. Moea Devries. With a pulse and energy that
make it entirely of today, Hapa's groundbreaking music connects
firmly to the Polynesian past, featuring poetic ballads about
the sea, the lushness of the land, and favorite chiefs all told
through melodies rich in harmony and backed by virtuoso guitar.
Never mind that most of the songs are sung in the Hawaiian tongue
- half of the one million Hapa albums have been sold on the mainland.
Their music is as exhilarating to fans of World Music as anything
by B-Tribe or the Gypsy Kings. Add their signature dose of American
acoustic folk/rock, Celtic and world influences and you have the

STAR DREAMS
Exploring the Mystery of
the Crop Circles
The Sensational Award Winning Feature Documentary by Producer/Director
Robert Nichol : "STAR DREAMS", is an attempt at making
definitions in the crop circle debate by illuminating various
perspectives and insights gained by the major researchers in the
field. The producer, Robert Nichol of Genesis Communications,
has decided that the best way to reach the public is by grass
roots face-to-face presentations.
This feature length documentary by Genesis Communications on the
Sunshine Coast of British Columbia seeks to present the latest
crop circles (2004) for all to see, by lifting them off the fields
so to speak and putting them into public imagination through the
medium of television and video release. To date, (and there have
been over 10,000 recorded crop circles world-wide since 1980)
there is a consensus among researchers that a higher intelligence
is sending a communiqué to us. How are we to respond to
this? By closing up or opening up to this remarkable phenomena
at this point in human history?

Marga Gomez: Los Big Names
Los Big Names is "a hilarious, wild ride ofhumor and touching
'momentitos'!"
- Curtain Up
Gomez is "a comic marksman."
- The New York TimesMarga Gomez's hilarious new one-woman show
Los Big Names sees her at the height of her comedic impersonation
and story telling powers. Drawing from her brushes with Hollywood,
including her role in the Sci-Fi thriller Sphere, her unconventional
upbringing by parents in the Latino show biz world, and their
reactions to her "turning out" gay, Los Big Names is
a "sweet and saucy riff on life on the outer edge of the
celebrity spotlight" (The Washington Post).
Gomez aims her comedy at everyone "regardless of ethnicity,
sexual orientation, or hairstyle." As stand up comic, Marga
Gomez has appeared on HBO's Comic Relief, Showtime's Latino Laugh

The Women of Paradise
: A surf film featuring local women
A documentary celebration of Community and Surf by film maker
Trevor Hill
Surfing seemed the perfect subject for a documentary, and here
was this small surf shop being loved and appreciated in the community
amidst all the enormous commercial surf entities. When Sally Smith,
owner of Paradise Surf Shop, was presented with his idea, she
invited Trevor to the surf team’s meeting and informed all
the women involved in the shop about the project. As he grew more
in awe of his chosen film subject, filming over the course of
a year, covering road trips, both individuals and groups such
as Women on Waves, Log Jam, Christian Surfers and Paradise’s
own bunch of contests and events, Trevor became convinced that
every surf community needs the equivalent of Paradise Surf Shop.
Not only thriving, but truly standing as catalyst and epicenter,
this phenomenal shop is a driving force for women’s surfing
advocacy. It is a safe haven for women to receive unbiased advice
and education, meet other women surfers, hang out, join the surf
team and purchase clothing and equipment in a supportive environment.
Trevor Hill provides a unique inside-view of the culture of women’s
surfing that he feels Santa Cruz will celebrate. His casual, un-narrated
and up-close style befriends the subject and invites the entire
surfing community to feel the growing excitement of this movement.

Documentary movie : TRUDELL
TRUDELL follows the life work of Native American poet/activist
John Trudell. Filmmaker Heather Rae has spent more than a decade
chronicling his travels, spoken word and politics in a poetic
and naturally stylized manner. The film combines archival, concert
and interview footage with abstract imagery mirroring the coyote
nature of Trudell himself. Trudell’s musical and film career
have led him to work with the likes of Robert Redford (Incident
at Oglala), Sam Shepard and Val Kilmer (Thunderheart), Kris Kristofferson,
Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Amy Ray and more recently Angelina
Jolie, who produced his current album, Bone Days. The film combines
interviews with his allies from the entertainment community, the
‘movement’ days, and his friends and family with archival
footage, concert footage from all over the world and abstract
imagery. TRUDELL is intended to be a film that steps outside of
traditional forms, even for Native films, and explores a figure
of our contemporary history in a way that fairly represents the
evocative nature of his work and significance.

The Tubes Extravaganza
Bonanza
featuring Fee Waybill.
A one-time performance with added visuals and other surprises,
promoted by two former Tubes crew members who both happen to reside
here in Santa Cruz. So far, a total of four former Tubes crew
members are involved in producing the show, and that list is sure
to grow as word gets out about this event. The production is still
in the works, as the crew is currently collaborating with members
of the band. Anyone familiar with the Tubes legendary stage show
in the 70's and the 80's would agree that it could never be the
same. But the idea is to put on a show something like what it
used to be, by bringing back some of the old theatrical gags that
the band is so well known for, and by adding some extra visuals
to the show, including utilizing the theatre's big movie screen
behind the band.
Tickets: $30.00 day of show

to welcome feminist, activist, and Academy Award-winning actress
Jane Fonda Ms. Fonda is in town to celebrate the publication
of her new memoir, My Life So Far, published by Random House.
Jane Fonda is one of the most recognizable women of our time.

and a wife, a workout guru and a role model. Now, in her extraordinary
memoir, My Life So Far, Fonda reveals that she is so much more.
From her youth among Hollywood’s elite and her early film
career to her controversial involvement in the Vietnam War and
the on-going challenge of living authentically while in the
public eye, she reveals intimate details and universal truths
that she hopes “can provide a lens through which others
can see their lives and how they can live them a little differently.”
Although she recently resumed her acting career, Ms. Fonda’s
primary focus is on activism and philanthropy—particularly
in the areas of adolescent reproductive health, pregnancy prevention,
school reform through the arts, and building resiliency in today’s
youth by addressing destructive gender types.

Gypsy Crossings:
Taraf de Haïdouks and Biréli Lagrène
Taraf de Haïdouks, who's name translates as "band of
brigands," are traditional gypsy musicians from the small
Romanian Village of Clejani. A dozen instrumentalists and singers
ranging in age from 20 to 78, they live by and for their music.
Their mix of local styles, representing the richness of the Romanian
folk tradition, ranges from haunting heartland ballads to dizzying
fiddle dances. The group was catapulted to fame after being included
on the sound track of the acclaimed 1992 film Latcho Drom. Their
appearance on the 2000-01 UCSC Arts & Lectures series garnered
such interest that a second show was added by popular demand and
promptly sold out!
Born into a gypsy community in Alsace, Biréli Lagrène
began playing the guitar at four, teaching himself Django Reinhardt
records at eight, and, after learning that the fourth and fifth
fingers of his master's fretting hand were paralyzed, spent the
next three years teaching himself to play with two fingers. Before
he was 16, Joseph Reinhardt claimed that Lagrène had inherited
his legendary brother's right (picking) hand. At the age of 35,
after exploring almost all avenues of modern guitar playing, Lagrène
returned to his roots and has taken his place as one of the most
treasured heirs of Reinhardt's skill, energy and irrepressible
musical spirit.
