A "WHITE" CHRISTMAS IN SANTA CRUZ
Postponed due to the Flu

THE WHITE ALBUM (LIVE) RETURNS TO THE RIO THEATRE
After two sold out weekends this year, first at the Rio in May, then at the Henry Mello Center in Watsonville in September, the White Album Ensemble is bringing back their live re-creation of the Beatle's "White Album” to the Rio Theatre for the Performing in time for the Holidays, a joint production of the Ensemble and the Rio. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Santa Cruz Music in Schools Programs. The December shows were close to selling out when the group decided to “pull the plug” and reschedule two weeks later, they just didn’t feel right about limping through the show, unable to hit the notes, or give a proper show due to illness.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel's front- page review of the performances said "If you missed the White Album show, start kicking yourself now", and "The best concert in Santa Cruz in years". A follow-up article by the Sentinel’s Wallace Baine stated, "Both Rio shows — benefiting local schools and anti-violence programs — were sold out. Many people felt they would enjoy the concert. But a common response in the wake of those shows was that people weren’t merely entertained, but transformed".
The "White Album Ensemble" has been working all through 2003 refining the show, which realizes the Beatle’s famous 1968 “White” Album, beginning to end. Each show will start with side 1, cut 1, "Back in the USSR", with an intermission after "Julia", then Side 2 will be reproduced, starting with "Birthday", and concluding with "Good Night". Most of today’s CD
listeners will only notice “Disc 1” and “Disc 2“.
The performance will be enhanced with choreography by Sara Wilbourne, a troupe of 12 Dancers, era Video projections, Stage Lighting, and additional vocalists.
Show time:8:00 PM Doors at 7:00
Tickets are $24 general admission, and $38 “White” circle, plus 5% Santa Cruz City Entertainment tax.
Tickets will be available at Streetlight Records, Santa Cruz (831) 421 9200, or the Rio Theatre Box Office, 1205 Soquel ave. (831) 423 8209,
Come dressed a la 1968!

Habib Koité
Guitarist/Singer/Composer, Habib Koité, one of West Africa ’s brightest stars, will be sizzlin' the Rio stage once again with his stellar band Bamada, to celebrate and promote their new release FOLY.
Habib is from the noble Khassonké griot lineage of Mali. His stirring, evocative music resonates with the emotional depth and spirit of the modern African experience. Habib's artistry and powerful personality earned him the adoration of fans such as Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, both of whom ended up visiting Habib in Mali. Habib takes some unique approaches to playing the guitar. He tunes his instrument to the pentatonic scale and plays on open strings as one would on a kamale n'goni. At other times Habib plays music that sounds closer to the blues or flamenco, two styles he studied under Khalilou Traoré a veteran of the legendary Afro-Cuban band Maravillas du Mali. Unlike the griots, his singing style is restrained and intimate with varying cadenced rhythms and melodies.

"ISHMAEL"
West Coast Premiere of New England Winter Surfing Documentary

Waking up to a wind chill of 15 below, scraping a foot of snow and ice from your car, wrapping yourself in so much neoprene only your eyes and nose show and then plunging into an ocean so cold that icicles form on your eyelashes in a matter of seconds … and that’s before the first set breaks on your head. It’s winter surfing in New England, and Maine filmmaker Ben Keller has captured it on film for his documentary "Ishmael". Filmed, edited and produced in the winter of 2002-03—one of the coldest in decades—Ishmael features 10 surfers from Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts talking about what it’s like to surf—and then surfing—northern New England’s moody winter seascapes. “This isn't your average surf flick,” says Keller. “New England might as well be the Sahara to most people who surf. But there’s a small, dedicated core of New Englanders that patiently wait for the waves, no matter the season, and Ishmael captures that vibe, uncovering what exactly compels someone to trudge through waist-deep snow to surf in 35-degree water.” Taking its name from the main character in Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick,” "Ishmael" echoes the connection between surfing and New England’s maritime history. Shot along the coast of New Hampshire, Cape Cod and Maine, the film alternates between mesmerizing winter footage and first-person accounts from men and women ages 12 to 52. "These surfers aren't out there for the hype,” says Keller. “They’re doing it for the love of sea and surf and place. It's in their blood."
“Ishmael really captures the depth of surfers’ relationship to the ocean in a place where surfers wouldn't normally think about it,” says Jeremiah S., Chairman of the Santa Cruz Chapter of Surfrider Foundation. “And that close relationship is exactly what the Santa Cruz Chapter of Surfrider is about, to help keep the oceans and beaches clean and accessible. We’re honored to be teamed up for this screening.”
Show time: 7:30pm
T ickets: $5
In conjunction with the premiere, a percentage of the proceeds will benefit the Santa Cruz Surfrider chapter, a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting the waves and beaches of Santa Cruz and environs. All ticket purchasers will be entered into a drawing for a free ‘fish’ surfboard, which will be given away at the end of the screening.

Steinberg Thrasher Presents...
a spoken word concert:
HENRY ROLLINS

An accomplished and experienced spoken word performer with several albums to his credit, Rollins' often hilarious style is in direct contrast to his musical persona, and he has drawn comparisons to Lenny Bruce, Bill Hicks and Dennis Leary (although, in contrast, he implores his audience not to destroy themselves with poisons like alcohol and tobacco). Despite the humour there is a serious edge to his words, best animated in the harrowing story of the murder of his best friend, Joe Cole, within feet of him. Rollins' workaholic frame also levers his own publishing company, 2.13.61 (after his birth date), which has grown from small beginnings in 1984 to publish a wide range of authors, including Rollins' own prolific output. He also has a music publishing enterprise Human Pittbull and co-owns a record label (Infinite Zero) with Rick Rubin dedicated to classic punk reissues - Rollins himself having graduated from the infamous late 70s Washington DC "straight edge" scene and bands such as SOA. He has additionally broken into film acting, appearing in The Chase and Johnny Mnemonic. In the new millennium, Rollins has released further spoken word recordings alongside solo work and outings with the Rollins Band, in addition to pursuing his acting and television career. All Ages.

Mariza
The queen of Portuguese fado music returns to Santa Cruz for one show. The London Times recently wrote, "by the end of the year, she should have established herself as an international star to rank among the greatest non-English-language divas of our time." Blessed with a soul-shaking voice, a transfixing stage presence and a profound understanding of the material she sings, Mariza simply has to be seen--and heard--to be believed. Mariza will be accompanied by a superb trio of fado musicians on Portuguese guitar, classical guitar and acoustic bass guitar. SHOGHAKEN ENSEMBLE
Traditional Armenian music and dance
"There may be no instrument that can sound as richly inconsolable as the duduk, the double-reed flute that is Armenia’s national instrument. Mr. Dabaghyan plays right up to the brink without ever slipping into it." – The New York Times

Following Armenian duduk virtuoso Gevorg Dabaghyan’s collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma in the celebrated Silk Road Project concerts, Dabaghyan’s 8-piece Shoghaken Ensemble comes to the Arts & Lectures series with its extraordinary ancient Armenian musical tradition of exhilarating folk dances, lullabies and haunting love songs. The group also features two of Armenia’s most renowned folk dancers – the sister and brother duo Hasmik and Aleksan Harutyunyan – who sing and perform intricate centuries-old dances from the villages of modern and historic Armenia with stunning virtuosity.
Since its formation in 1991 the Shoghaken Ensemble has aimed to revive traditional Armenian folk music and preserve it from foreign influences. The ensemble uses only traditional instruments: duduk (double-reeded flute), kamancha (spiked fiddle), kanoon (lap harp), d’hol (percussion) and other woodwind instruments indigenous to the region. Shoghaken’s music can be
heard on the sound track to Atom Egoyan's film Ararat (2002). The group’s latest CD, Armenia Anthology (Traditional Crossroads, 2002), was recorded in their hometown of Yerevan, the Armenian capital.

TRAILER PARK TROUBADOURS
Just who are these Sons of Hitches? On the east side of a small Kentucky town called Screamin' Holler, between the railroad tracks and Route 7, there's a trailer park called Pine View Heights. It's a quiet little community where you can leave your door unlocked at night and walk down to the County Seat Grocery for a can of snuff, an RC Cola, and a couple of lottery tickets. Neighbors watch out for each other. Children play carelessly through the streets and cul de sacs. And elderly people watch your every move, and talk about you at the Post Office. Emerging from this small town atmosphere are two young men named R.J. "Antsy" McClain and Stephen Foster Fleming III. (His friends call him "Flem" for short.) Antsy and Flem are third cousins twice removed, and grew up four trailers down from each other in Pine View Heights. Their songs are original, written by McClain, with an occasional Antsy/Flem collaboration. "I write out of my own experience," McClain continues, "Woody Guthrie sang about trains. Red Sovine sang about trucks. We sing about trailers. It's who we are." Playing a style of music they call "folkabilly," the duo has played throughout the country, taking their act to appreciative, easy-to-please audiences. Now touring with a three-piece back-up outfit called The Sons of Hitches Band, they have expanded, giving their audiences the same old Troub sound, only louder. The Trailer Park Troubadours maintain a desire to widen their horizons. Flem states, "We have a vision. We hope one day to take our music to exotic, far-away places like Idaho or Wyoming." Antsy adds, "We're on an adventure that will take us where we never dreamed of going. Kind of like Star Trek, but with a lot more bathroom stops."

LEO KOTTKE
In the genre of acoustic guitarists who have stretched folk traditions since the '60s, Leo Kottke stands above the rest as one of the most original and consistently inspired. Since his first album in 1969, Kottke has developed a distinctive sound and style, with his rolling thumb patterns, his blend of rootsiness and mysterious musical turns, with touches of bottleneck playing and periodic vocals along the way. And yet Kottke has also taken efforts to expand his musical horizons, creating a body of work that sounds like an organic mixture of folk, country, blues and jazz, with hints of classical ideas, as well.

The quintet playfully ranges across genres, with songs & tunes brand new & newly-refreshed.

RUBBER REVOLVER
The new show by The White Album Ensemble
After six sold out performances of “The White Album Live” this past year, first at the Rio in May, then at the Henry Mello Center in Watsonville in September, then again in January, 2004 at the Rio, the White Album Ensemble is focusing their energy on “Rubber Revolver“, performing the Beatles’ “Rubber Soul”, and “Revolver” albums live, as well as the singles which were released simultaneously with each album (“We Can Work It Out”, Day Tripper” with Rubber Soul, Paperback Writer”, and “Rain” with Revolver), as was customary for the Beatles.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel's front- page review of the White Album Live’s performances said: "If you missed the White Album show, start kicking yourself now", and "The best concert in Santa Cruz in years".
Adam Cotton of the Santa Cruz Metro remarked, “It’s not just a re-creation, it’s an experience. I was utterly blown away”.
Many people consider “Rubber Soul”, and “Revolver” the pinnacle of the Beatles’ songwriting and recording career.
These records symbolize the transformation of the Beatlemania- driven Fab Four’s cheery visages into more sophisticated, mature artists who used the recording studio as their paintbrush, exploring much darker, deeper themes than “She Loves You”, or “Please Please Me”. Granted, they had said “Can’t Buy Me Love” before, but Rubber Soul’s “Nowhere Man”, “I’m Looking Thru You”, and “Think For Yourself” hint at an existential questioning of the way we view reality in a way Rock and Roll had not previously addressed.
Revolver took that new stance one step further, as was evidenced by its scathing view of bureaucracy and greed in “Taxman” the loneliness portrayed in “Eleanor Rigby” (string section arranged by producer George Martin, whose musical presence and orchestral leanings really began to become noticeable at this point as well), “Love You To”, with its traditional Indian instrumentation and modes, hinting at belief in higher consciousness, ending with the enigmatic “Tomorrow Never Knows”, with its backwards vocals, tape loops and “surrender to the void” lyrics .
Bob Dylan, the Vietnam War, the Beat and Avant Garde movements all influenced their point of view, in that pre- Summer of Love era. The Beatles themselves, in numerous references, stated that they felt that Rubber Soul and Revolver were as one work, a double album concurrent, but released separately due to contractual obligations.
John Lennon called the two records “Bookends”.
The White Album Ensemble: Jason Schimmel (Guitar, Keyboard and Vocals) Tiran Porter (Bass, Vocals) Dale Ockerman (Keyboards, Guitar, Mandolin, Trumpet, Vocals), Ken Kraft (Guitar and Vocals,) Alan Heit, (Vocals, and Guitar) Michael Daugherty (Drums, vocals) Bob Bliss (Keyboards, Guitar and Vocals) Richard Bryant (Vocals, and Percussion) With the addition of:
timb harris (violin, trumpet)
String Quartet- “ Eleanor Rigby” String charts by Barry Philips (Cellist, “Concert for George”): Timb Harris - violin, Ben Blechman - violin, Sarah Hart - viola, Renatta Bratt – cello
Indian instrumentation “Love You To”: Steve Robertson (Tablas) Ernest Baber (Sitar, Tamboura)
These musicians have performed and recorded with the Doobie Brothers, Estradasphere, Snail, Jerry Miller Band, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Little River Band, Page/Plant and many others!
Over $10,000.00 has been raised for area school music programs, and the non-profit organization Guitars not Guns, in the past year by the Ensemble, from profits of their shows.
As with the White Album shows, there will be a raffle at intermission, with proceeds benefiting Guitars, not Guns, a non-profit organization. An Epiphone guitar (John Lennon frequently played an Epiphone) has been donated for the Raffle, by Epiphone

DF41: Portrait of an Ex-Artist Jesse Rose DeRooy (51:05 dvd) $6.00
Forty-one, flat broke, and self-obsessed, Santa Cruzian Darryl Ferrucci agreed to have this non-fictional video character portrait made about himself. When he watched it he had a good time...so will you. Made by a close personal friend, and featuring more than a dozen interviews, this delightful romp through one guy's life will make you feel like having a refreshing cocktail and a conversation with a good friend!

6:00
pm ROCK GRRRLS $6.00

EDGEPLAY: A FILM ABOUT THE RUNAWAYS-Victory Blue-Tischler (90 min. dvd) This World Premiere chronicles the rise of the band, including the unknown future rock stars Lita Ford and Joan Jett, its hope an dreams, and its eventual disintegration as the result of media belittling, in-fighting and drug use amidst rumours of verbal and emotional abuse by the band's management.
"I was mesmerized by VB's wonderfully raw look at what a group of young teenaged girls went through in the late 70's and early 80-'s. It is a real and unvarnished account of a truly dysfunctional band. This incredibly honest rock documentary goes to 11"-Rob Reiner

HOLLYWOOD TRASH AND TINSEL Cheri Lovedog (8min. Mini DV)
Hollywood Trash and Tinsel is a mock-umentary currently in production. The Film uses a wonderful blend of reality, satire and humorous home video shot while making the movie "Prey for Rock and Roll" to provide a behind-the-scenes look at film making from the writers perspective. Principal cast members, producers, men in suits and others will share their stories and experiences about fighting the "Art v Commerce" war-an often funny, but never pretty battle for honesty and integrity in the morally and ethically bankrupt business we call show biz. "Prey for Rock and Roll" had its world premier at the Sundance Film Festival, Tribeca and Toronto Film Festivals, and won the Best narrative Feature Award at the Santa Cruz Film Festival. None of which appears in the marketing or promotion of the film. Huh...an interesting or stupid business decision? We want answers, damn it!

8:30 PM CLOSING NIGHT $15.00

EVERGREEN/INDUCTION-Ray Manzarek (10 min/ 2 min Beta SP)
These two are from the archives and definitely stand up against the test of time. Ray Manzarek's student films from UCLA deal with many of the universal laws of life, love arts and freedom.

LOVE HER MADLY-Ray Manzarek (80min Dvd)
Love Her Madly; inspired by a Jim Morrison short story is a tale of sexual obsession, madness and murder set amidst the campus community of the exclusive California College of the Arts. At the film's outset, an unidentified body draped by a blood-spattered sheet lies center stage within the school's Greek amphitheater, and the story-in-the-main unfolds over the course of the twenty-four hours leading up to the murder.
The four characters at the heart of this thriller are all artists: a professor of drama and former winner of the Pulitzer Prize, his two young protégés, a sculptor and a video artist, and the untamable actress who casts her hold upon all three men but can be held by none. This intrigue of tangled relationships offers ample reason for any of the leads to be suspected as either killer or killed; it is a whodunit in the finest noir tradition. Yet, directed by and mated to a soundtrack scored by Doors keyboard wizard, Ray Manzarek, Love Her Madly christens a new millennial genre- hip-hop Hitchcock. Director and Rock Icon Ray Manzarek of The Doors will play following the screening of Love Her Madly. Look for special guests to accompany him.

FASTER

Two wheels. 200MPH. Every man for himself.
FASTER is the first feature-length documentary to go inside the MotoGP world since television took a sport watched by a few thousand spectators at race tracks and turned it into prime-time entertainment for over 350 million people worldwide. The MotoGP world championship is the pinnacle of motorcycle sport, a series of sixteen races on five continents contested by twenty-four of the world’s top riders. Filmed around the world during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, FASTER asks this question: How do you go faster than the rest, how do you win at this glamorous, dangerous game? The movie could be subtitled: How do you beat Valentino Rossi? The 24 year old Italian, world champion in 2001 and 2002, currently dominates MotoGP. He is the biggest star the sport has ever seen and the charismatic centre of the film. In addition to Rossi, FASTER focuses on three other MotoGP riders: Rossi’s bitter rival Max Biaggi; the brilliant but injury-prone Garry McCoy; and the rising teenage star John Hopkins. All of this makes FASTER much more than a film about the current MotoGP scene. It is the definitive story of motorcycle racing at the highest level, and of the handful of men who have what it takes to win. Narrated by Ewan McGregor. Starring Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi, Garry McCoy, John Hopkins. Music by tomandandy and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Written and directed by Mark Neale. Running time: 103 minutes. "This film fucking rocks" - Ewan McGregor. Presented in association with Santa Cruz Vampires Motorcycle Club.

TORTOISE
Beans
The Eternals

Throughout their 10-year history, TORTOISE have been one of the most singularly dynamic bands in modern music. Bridging the gap between rock, jazz, and electronic music, with each record they have not only redefined their own sound, but helped to nudge music itself in unique and exciting new directions. Their members are perpetually involved with multiple projects, thus it is quite noteworthy that It's All Around You, Tortoise's fifth full-length, is the first album that the band has ever made without a single lineup change. The results of this are a record that is the product of five distinctly visionary musicians who are able to synergistically unite like never before. BEANS: Since being part of Anitpop Consortium, BEANS has emerged as a solo artist, presenting a tight combo of intricate verbal patter and streetwise, yet always experimental beat attitude, he is the perfect mergence of rugged hip-hop bravado and well-crafted poetic brilliance. THE ETERNALS, a Chicago based post-rock group featuring Damon Locks, Dan Fliegel and Wayne Montana.

On the negative, topics cover social issues such as child abuse, cults and consumerism. On the positive, it deals with the beauty of the hidden inner child, the ability to rise above adversity, the healing properties of music and the yearning for belonging.
As an art project, much will be offered. TOMMY is a musically powerful experience for both the artists and the audience. Recently, most of the company’s production team worked on HAIR and THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW which enjoyed popular and critical success. TOMMY should be no different.
With each production, the Pacific Players has fine tuned the creative staff and the performers with the purpose of making an ‘in house’ performing arts group which would have its base at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. The Players plan on becoming a very visible arts group with the intent of using local talent to produce professional grade shows.
It should be noted that this version of TOMMY will not be just a rendering of the Broadway musical. Rather, it reaches into the roots of the original version created by The Who in 1969 and works in elements of both the film and final stage versions. The intent is to create a narrative which is clear, powerful and beautiful. A great deal of research has gone into this production thus far. Articles, interviews, videos of old ‘live’ footage, screenings of the film and Broadway piece, a general dissection of the lyrics along with investigations into the metaphysical and philosophical aspects of the piece have all been brought together to ensure that The Pacific Players’ presentation accurately depicts the original intentions of the show. This version of TOMMY will be unique and becomes, essentially, an ‘original adaptation’.
The entire creative staff has a great deal of experience. Director, Gregory Harbert, is a Production Supervisor for UC Santa Cruz Theater Operations and the Technical Director for UC Santa Cruz Arts & Lectures. Other work includes Assistant Director and Technical Director for the Bayshore Lyric Opera Company (1998-2001), General Manager for the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival (2000-2001), Co-chairperson for the Cultural Council Associates (2000-2001), and numerous roles and functions within the Santa Cruz theater scene since 1989. Ed Levy, Music Director, has worked on a multitude of musical theater projects. Recent productions include HAIR in 2002, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW in 2003 and GODSPELL in 2004. He has assembled a great group of pit musicians who have worked together on many musical theater projects. Ed was Stage and Musical Director for TOMMY in 2002 at San Lorenzo Valley High School.

Felton FLOW (Friends of Locally Owned Water) is excited to present a FREE showing of the riveting documentary
"THIRST"
'Thirst' is a new documentary that examines community water conflicts on three continents. 'Thirst' demonstrates that popular opposition to the privatization of water ignites remarkable coalitions that cross partisan lines. When it comes to water, many people demand local control and fear the arrival of multinational corporations with large lobbying budgets and little local loyalty. Thirst also shows that the individual struggles of these communities raise the same profound questions: Is water a human right for all people? Or is it a commodity to be bought, sold, and traded in a global marketplace? Come see THIRST and decide for yourself.
The movie will be followed by a question and answer session with the filmmakers, and representatives from FLOW, Public Citizen, Local Government and others. The film is a benefit for FLOW and donations will be gladly accepted.
Showtime: 7:00pm
FREE ADMISSION gladly accepting donations
FLOW (Friends of Locally Owned Water) is a grassroots organization in Felton attempting to purchase its water system from California American Water, a subsidiary of the multinational water giant RWE. FLOW believes that the community of Felton would be better served by local ownership, that long term prices will be lower for ratepayers, and that the fragile ecosystem that provides water will be better protected.

The Rio Theatre presents
LAURA LOVE DUO & FRUIT TRIO

If you like music that fires your imagination! 3 frontline women. 2 wielding guitars whilst the other commands an arsenal of horns. Each of them sing, write & locks seamlessly to the other. It’s a vocal blend reminiscent of the great harmonisers of all time. And now… the inclusion of the velvet voiced Brian Ruiz & his groove-laden bass adding a euphonious synchronicity to the Adelaide collaboration known as FRUiT.
Laura Love can be counted among the great success stories in independent music. With each album, she attracts new audiences and acclaim with music that addresses important issues—war, racism, and sexism, to name a few—while remaining clever, often outright funny, throughout. Her wry wit is as remarkable as the depth of her insight and the beauty of her voice. Backed by a band of now longtime musical collaborators, Love deftly navigates a number of styles on You Ain’t Got No Easter Clothes, including folk, funk, bluegrass and blues. The album follows up her highly acclaimed, if controversial, first album for KOCH, Welcome To Pagan Place, which Out featured in a “100 Greatest Gay Success Stories of 2003” special issue and provoked Utne Reader to call her one of “40 Artists Who Will Shake the World.”

KPIG Radio and Moe's Alley Present an over 21 concert at the Rio Theatre
THE SUBDUDES
plus special guest
NINA STOREY

In 1987, four musicians got together for what they envisioned would be a one-time performance at Tipitina’s in New Orleans. It was a night of mostly acoustic music -- sparse instrumentation with a strong emphasis on vocal harmonies. The show far exceeded expectations, and on that Monday night THE SUBDUDES were born. Nearly 10 years later, after five well-received albums and several years of hard touring, the subdudes called it quits in November 1996. Spinoff projects ensued, as did the occasional reunion show. Finally, in the spring of 2002, three of the four original subdudes decided to get back together. They recruited additional longtime friends to fill out the sound and called themselves the Dudes, but with or without the “sub,” the music was still unmistakably the subdudes. Today, the guys are once again called the subdudes. And there’s still nobody in the world that sounds like them. So, welcome back the subdudes: Tommy Malone, John Magnie, Steve Amedée, Tim Cook and Jimmy Messa.
Singer/songwriter from Boulder, Colorado, NINA STOREY, blends an eclectic sound of blues, rock, funk and pop. She has been compared to a diverse group of artists such as Janis Joplin, Chaka Kahn, Tori Amos, Whitney Houston and Billie Holiday. Nina has just released a new live CD entitled, "24 Off The Board" which showcases Nina's raw, intimate and explosive voice, as well as her catchy melodic yet thought provoking lyrics and music.
SHOWTIME 7:00PM : 21 and over only
Tickets 22.00 advance available Streetlight Records, Moe's Alley & on-line HERE or by phone after 4pm at 831-479-1854

PACIFIC RIM FILM FESTIVAL
Closing Night Event
"ROCKS WITH WINGS"
A documentary film by Rick Derby (USA, 2002)
A benefit screening for the Pacific Rim Film Festival. This two-hour documentary by filmmaker Rick Derby traces the journey of Coach Jerry Richardson, an african american high school basketball star from Texas, and the Lady Chieftains, a women's high school basketball team from the small, impoverished Navajo community of Shiprock, New Mexico. With intense and at times controversial determination, Richardson molds the shy young women - players who have experienced more defeat than victory - into fighters on the basketball court who utimately win the 1989 State Championship. What results is an inspirational story about the meaning of winning and losing, set against a complex background of race, heritage and societal expectations - for the players, the coach, and the Navajo community.
Filmmaker Rick Derby and former Lady Chieftain team member Cheryl Lee will here in person for an after-film discussion.
Admission: $10.00
Tickets available at: Logos Books & Records 1117 Pacific Avenue, Downtown Santa Cruz Bookshop Santa Cruz, 1520 Pacific Avenue, Downtown Santa Cruz

Thursday, October 28th
The Rio Theatre and Elsa Productions
present the west coast premiere of
"MOOG"

plus a post-show LIVE talk and Q&A with ROBERT MOOG
A feature documentary by filmmaker/musician Hans Fjellestad about Robert Moog, inventor of the modern synthesizer. The 70 minute film explores Moog's collaborations with musicians over the years, and his ideas about creativity, design, interactivity and spirituality. Bob Moog (b. 1934) has been inventing and building electronic musical instruments for nearly half a century. Still active in his workshop in rural North Carolina, Moog continues to shape musical culture with some of the most inspiring instruments ever created. Moog explains that he "can feel what's going on in a piece of electronic equipment... it's something between discovering and witnessing." And he is convinced that many musicians come to "feel" a circuit in a similar way. "They make contact." In fact, musicians make such strong emotional connections with the electronics inside a Moog synthesizer that Moog himself has reached cult hero status. Moog has not only made prodigious contributions to modern music and culture, but he has become a character within an unfolding "American maverick inventor" mythology. Moog certainly walks and talks the "mad scientist" part, complete with the fly-away white hair, intense eyes, eccentric mannerisms and a head full of stories.
The film was shot on location in Asheville, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and London, featuring appearances by Keith Emerson, Walter Sear, Gershon Kinsgley, Jean-Jacques Perrey & Luke Vibert, Rick Wakeman, DJ Spooky, Herb Deutsch, Bernie Worrell, Pamelia Kurstin, Tino Corp. with Charlie Clouser, Money Mark, Mix Master Mike, and an eclectic mix of performers. Artists such as Stereolab, Meat Beat Manifesto, Tortoise, Money Mark, Luke Vibert & Jean-Jacques Perrey, 33, Moog Cookbook, Plastiq Phantom, Psilonaut, Bernie Worrell & Bootsy Collins, Roger O'Donnell, The Album Leaf, Pete Devriese, Bostich, Charlie Clouser, Baiyon, Suzanne Ciani, Gershon Kingsley, Doug McKechnie, Electric Skychurch and others are contributing original music produced on Moog instruments for the soundtrack.
Additional discoveries like vintage films borrowed from dusty private collections round out this stylized, wonderfully strange story of a true American maverick.
BOB MOOG will appear live at the Rio Theatre for this special west coast premiere screening for a talk and Q&A after the film.
Show time: 7:30pm
Admission: $7.00
Tickets available at the door only, beginning at 6:30pm
